I took some on a Saturday b/c I was starting early labor... and by that evening I was in full labor... it was horrible though b/c it made me go to the bathroom a lot but after I took it the pains really kicked in and then my son was born the next day at 4:30am. Except for the urgency to use the bathroom it wasn't bad... but hey I was already at 5cm when I went to the hospital so maybe it does work?? But who really knows.

No, no, no, no, no. It can be dangerous for you and your baby. If you are eager to kickstart your labour, there is some basis to believe that intercourse and nipple stimulation can actually kickstart contractions. This does not always work, but it can if your body is nearing delivery anyways. Having said this, I can never understand why women want to jumpstart their labour. I was so sad when I had to be induced 2 weeks early (for medical reasons) and really missed being pregnant afterwards. Enjoy your pregnancy as long as you can.

Okay...it will work..IF..and ONLY if your body is ready to go into labor. Nothing short of problems will jump your labor. I can tell you though is causes diarrhea which can also kick start contractions. I got sick (Not from castor oil) and starting having braxton hiccs...but because my body wasn't ready for labor it didn't continue. I've heard that it cleans your system out nicely though... :P

My mum did it and now hates orange jucice (what it was mixed in) but it worked, mind you she was 1 week over and i think would have gone in to labour anyway. I did is and it was like oil and i felt ill. Talk about diarrhea and my uterus went into one long contraction all night and no i didn't go into labour and have my son for another week. I think that was the point at which my son got distressed and pooed in my waters. I made my husband promise me that he not let me do it ever agian even if i am 3 weeks over and want to kill myslef. For me it was not worth it. I'm now 20 weeks with my second bub and keep reminding myslef never to do it. Well that was my experience. Up to you what you want to do but you would only prolly try it once..lol.

If it does work, it is by causing you to have diarrhea...giving you cramps that start the contractions in your uterus. Going into labor while dehydrated from diarrhea is a bad idea.

I was 12 days overdue with my third child and took castor oil and orange juice, I had a two and a half hour labour which was very hard out and I think i went into shock as it was so quick. I did not want to be induced so took the oil, It certainly worked and i would only recommend as a last resort. It tastes horrible (well the texture is oil) and is hard to swallow! Also it will only work if your cervix is ripe and your baby is ready to be born. Good luck :-)

hi there i was very active in the bedroom due to my hormones giving me a very high sex drive i had been told of a girl who knew my mother in law who had sex six weeks before her baby was due i didnt think it would happen to me so i continued i still had six weeks and after a quickie i had a show but it didnt cross my mind that this would be the start of 56hours of labour to bring my baby boy into the world 6weeks early so it works for some but not for all xx

I was told my midwife and doula that not only is it an old wives tale that doesnt work. It just helps you empty out your system, and in some case women get dioreaha. I think that would be an awfuly messy and bad start to labour. It my opinion i wouldnt do it. What worked for me was drinking raspberry leaf tea, make sure its not just flavoured with raspberries. It helps to riped your cervix. I also had a hot curry the night i went into labour, although sometimes that can be risky too. Ive also heard that nothing you can do will help the baby just comes when shes ready. At my pregnancy group they told me that sex doesnt help. You would need mass amounts of this hormone in sperm to make any difference. Good luck!

I was 10 days overdue and my midwife wanted to induce me because of low amniotic fluid. I really did not want to be induced for various reasons so I drank 4 oz. of castor oil mixed with orange juice (yuck!) and very soon after I threw up and went through the other unpleasantries. Not too long after the first contractions came..needless to say, I was up all night with the early labor and was 4 cm. dilated when I saw my midwife in the morning.
IT DEFINITELY WORKED! but you have to take at least 4 oz. and be willing to spend a lot of time in the bathroom. I still can't drink orange juice to this day.
And although this did not happen with me, there is a chance of meconium making it into the fluid.
Best of luck and hope you don't have to be induced.

oh yeah sometimes it will cause the baby to have a bowel movement which could make her/him swallow its stool before birth. That is not a good thing and make your child very very ill. Yes someone posted to have sex and walk. there is hormones in semen that they use to start labor and nipple stimulation brings the contractions on too. but be careful because you should let your doctor or midwife only get this baby here if it is needed. your baby knows its birthday don't do anything that might hurt it. it will happen and you both will be better off not messing with mother nature!

you should wait until your due date. it can give you wild cramps and loose stools. rest and let the baby pick the due date unless it is medically needed to induce labor.

it does work you just got to take it right i took it with both my two.you have to take one ounce of castor oil and one ounce of grape juice.thats to get the oil down and you do this every hour up to four hours.it cleans you out and starts contractions.i took it at four in the afternoon and ended at eight and the next morning at four am my contrctions started.hope that helps

Don't do it! All it did was give me violoent stomach cramps and diarrea for 8 hours. It was the worse! I agree w/ the other moms. I tried everything I could to not get induced, but if the baby is not ready, there is really not much you can do. Good Luck!

Been there, done that Twice!! It works I've heard people say it will make labor go too fast. It is nasty! I tried to mix it with orange juice the second time...even worse. just take it and then drink something.

My Mum said she took castor oil with me - about a cup i think, and it gave her a massive bout of diahorrea, then she went into labour! They say it works because it frees up your bowel and promotes some movement, but what a way to start!!
Heres a better idea, have sex with lots of nipple stimulation...much more enjoyable! LOL

I was told by my Gyn doc AFTER the fact I was induced for my third child that if you have a breast pump at home, you may try to stimulate your nipples by pumping them. Nipple stimulation, especially by a pump cause your uterus to contract. For all those breastfeeding mothers out there, I'm sure you remember the first few days of breastfeeding in the hospital where you had the contractions of the uterus while and right after breastfeeding? If you try it, let me know how it goes...it might just work! Good luck!

the theory behind castor oil, and spicy foods for that matter is that they will cause you to have increased bowel activity and cramps which can induce uterine contractions but more often than not does not work. it will usually just make you uncomfortable and miserable. i wanted to jump start my labor too but i made sure i did research on all of the wives tales, pretty much the only ones that actually work are walking and having sex.

It doesn't work to start labor, but it does work to give you violent diarrhea and stomach cramps (not the good labor kind)! Not worth the try!

I did the castor oil with my first kiddo. They sell the odorless/tasteless kind now. It started contractions which put me into the labor room but, then I was sent home because the contractions did not go anywhere. Both of my best friends also tried castor oil and one of them ended up pooping all over herself and the other spent the night on the toilet. Needless to say, I didn't even think about trying it with baby number 2

The best thing for you to do is have sex and walk walk walk to start labor. You can ask your ob for suggestions or if they are willing to help your labor along. During my last pregnancy I was dilated to two for almost three weeks and was miserable. My ob offered to strip my membranes to help labor along. At home my husband and I had sex and went for a long walk after a few hours I started to go into labor. Our daughter was born quickly after a three hour labor.

It nis the worst thing ever trust me DON'T TRY IT! I was so desperate with my third and all the casor oil did was make sure my colon was nice and violently cleaned out. Way too much cramping and pain and it never did a thing it was another 3 weeks before the baby came by induction.

baby will come when baby is ready... no amount of pushing for labor will cause anything to happen until baby is truly ready to come. i would not use castor oil, it can be quite harmful to you and baby. have a little patience :)

I've been told it's very unsafe for you and the baby and doesn't work anyways. Just a wives' tale. The only things really proven to work are sex, nipple stimulation and exercise. Sperm on the cervix helps start the labor process. Proven to be most effective. Good luck.

Haven't tried it but I hear it just gives you bad diarrhea. I know how it feels to be impatient and going crazy with the waiting - mine was a week late. But I don't think it does any good to try to hurry it. Baby will come when he's ready. Because what if you could speed things up but he hadn't got himself into the right position yet? It would lead to a difficult labour.
If you are afraid of having to be induced, just remember, it's your choice. You don't have to take the doctor's advice - plenty of babies are born a couple of weeks late and it's no problem.

I'm being started on the 12 if he hasnt came by then (due to high blood pressure) and my sister in law told me it was amazing it make her kids walk out (30 min for the first and 11 min for the second) then i asked my cousin (which is an RN in the OB in my hospital) and she said NO that its horrible and just cause pain. I just wanted to see what everyone thought of it.

it doesnt work.... believe me, I tried EVERYTHING! I went for long walks, did squats, drank raspberry tea, went and had my ankles (pressure points) rubbed by a Dulla, increased the intercourse..... the baby will come when its good and ready.... Both of my kids were late and both had to be induced.
When is your due date?
