Over the past 3 days, my left breast has been VERY sore, almost like a sharp pain right under the nipple. It almost feel like there's a little pebble right in the area where it hurts. Could this be a clogged duct and if it is, does anyone know of anything to help? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

within the first week of being home with my son I had the fever and flu like symptoms.. it was awful! I went to the Dr and got antibiotics. but I got lots of clogged ducts, I found that heat and pumping/nursing helps!

thanks so much ladies! I actually went to the ER last night because I was running a 101.7 fever and had redness and was sooo achy all night. They told me it was mastitis and gave me antibiotics. Its already starting to feel better :)

ugh!!! I hate it when that happens. I just make my son nurse on that side until it passes. that seems to be the only way to get rid of it.

Heather has some great tips. You also want to try to nurse more frequently (or pump between feedings) to try and keep the breast drained. Plugged ducts become mastitis when the milk sits in the breast for long periods. I've always had a lot of luck putting some beans or rice in a sock and tying it off then microwaving that for a minute or two until it's warm (not super hot) and let that sit on the plug for 30 minutes or so massaging a bit every few minutes.

If your breast is at all red or hot feeling OR you have flu like symptoms (fever, upset stomach), see your doctor, as clogged ducts can become mastitis infections, which need to be treated with antibiotics. You do not have to stop nursing if it is mastitis.

I had mastitis twice and clogged ducts a number of times and the following tips will (hopefully) help:
- before nursing, use a warm compress and some massage (from the outside of the clog in toward the nipple) to try to loosen the clog
- nurse on that side first each nursing until the clog subsides, since baby will suck more enthusiastically on the first side
- use a different nursing position than you normally use, as various positions drain ducts differently

Almost always- if I did those three things, a clog would clear up within one or two feedings. But do watch for symptoms of mastitis and don't let that go if you see them!!

Good luck! Feel better soon!
