Sierra,
If you think you have mastitis you can go to your OBGYN/Midwife.

That's great that it cleared up. Sounds like you caught it early.

if you are having fever, chills, aches and pain in your breast its not a clogged milk duct, its mastitis(spelling?) clogged milk duct will b sore, feel like a little lump, burn around the area, but with all the other symptoms thats infection, you need to go get antibiotics, i had it with my second daughter, horribly painful and you dont want it to get worse!

That's not a clogged duct, that's mastitis. You sound like you may be catching a clogged duct a little late and it begins to turn into mastitis, but if only lasts a day? then you're at least catching the infection early. Ways to prevent clogged ducts (which can turn into mastitis if left untreated) are to alternate nursing positions (cradle hold one nursing session then football hold the next). The purpose of that is to focus baby's suction on all of your ducts to be sure your breasts are thoroughly drained. Watch for small lumps. If you notice a lump that feels a little sore start applying a hot compress before and during nursing. Massage the lump gently while nursing. Point baby's nose at the clog while nursing. This focuses the suction on that duct. Start with that side each time you nurse until the clog is cleared up.

I got clogged ducts all the time while on the shield. I made it a point to gently massage my breast while my daughter was nursing to 1. check for clogs and 2. it helped drain my breasts. Since you have a fever, chills and are achy I would put in a call to your doctor. Mastitis can be serious if left untreated. The best thing you can do for it is nurse and unclog the duct where it started (if that's what is causing the mastitis). You might be able to clear it up without anitbiotics, but you should check with your doctor.
