Coffee and Breastfeeding...

Hello! I have a 7 1/2 month old who is exclussively breastfed. Since I never had the heart to let her cry it out, I have yet to get a full night sleep and now have teething to add to the equation. To say the least: I'm tired! I have always had about 2 cups of coffee each morning without it seeming to effect my daughter... But I crave more and more coffee as I get less and less sleep. What are the pros and cons of just a cup or two more??

I rarely drink coffee, but when I do our little boy won't nap during the day and has a hard time sleeping at night. If you plan on introducing more caffeine into her diet, be prepared that she may not adjust to it quickly. I, too, was frightened of co-sleeping at first. Some things we do are: sleep on your side with your arm under your pillow; have your baby sleep on her side cuddled up to you (which is normal if your feeding laying down) with your free arm curled around baby; place your pillow's edge far from your baby so your head is at the edge (I found it uncomfortable if my head rolled off the pillow). Hope this helps and good luck!

Quoting Lyndsay:

I don't feel comfortable cosleeping because I am constantly worried about rolling onto her or her falling off the bed... I tried it when she was newborn and colicky. Thank you also for the advice on hydration... I had noticed not feeling as good and hadn't really connected those dots.

OK- another option you can explore- putting a mattress down on the floor.  You could nurse your little one to sleep there, and then when she falls asleep you could move back to your own bed.  If you DID end up falling asleep, at least you'd get more rest.

Of course there's always the age-old suggestion of napping when baby naps during the day.  This definitely helps me!

You're concerned about how additional coffee will affect your baby.

Studies have shown that most babies aren't affected by under five cups of coffee per day. However, this is an individual basis. Some babies can't tolerate it when mom drinks more than one cup. It more than likely would not be a problem for you to try another cup. Do make sure to drink adequate clear fluids (not soda!), as caffiene is dehydrating.

Many mothers find that if they bring their babies into bed with them and sleep while they nurse they can get more rest. Would that be something you could do?

from my own experience - makes baby jittery as all get out and refuse to nap and makes them cranky beyond all reason. was not a fun few days until i realized it was coffee. i was bummed .but to keep going all day, i started taking vitamin D in the morning by Carlson. holy wow - i just have one cup of coffee, take my multi and my Vit D and I am amazed at all the things i've been getting done here! also, when teething, add a good calcium/magnesium to your diet - something coffee strips your body of - and the calcium helps baby sleep better.
