Does anyone have any advice on colic and how to help baby? Callum seems to suffer from it most evenings, sometimes for up to 5 hours

Have you tried Biogaia? It is probiotic drops that you give to your baby orally everyday. You give 5 drops a day. There is proven reserch done that shows it reduced the crying times in colicy babies. You should google it. You can get it at any pharmacy ( you have to ask the pharmacist because it is kept in the fridge behind the counter) I started giving it to my daughter at 2 weeks and she is still on it and it works fantastic!! She had really bad gas and tummy troubles and now she has none at all. You should really look into this as something for your baby.

Hi Barb,
Let me first say that I SO empathize with you. Wish I could be there to give you a break from the screams.
My daughter is 11 months and we dealt with severe colic for the first 4 months. It was hell. She normally screamed from 4/5pm until 11pm later, often til 2am. I was living on 2-3 horus of sleep and was a zombie. I was praying all night for God's grace to get me through and for me not to take my frustration/exhaustion out on her.
We tried lots of things. Nothing was a cure, but some helped.
1)tried taking all dairy out of my diet since I was breastfeeding: Didn't help at all (and I did it for 3 months!)
2) Hylands all natural colic tablets: seemed to help calm her down a bit. They dissolve quickly in their mouth and are homeopathic.
3) Sound machine: Helped her stay asleep once she finally fell asleep. We still use it and play 'ocean sounds'.
4)Swaddling: Sometimes this helped, sometimes she just seemed to get pissed off. Completely stopped at 4 months and she seemed pleased with that.
5)Liquid Zantac: This seemed to take the edge off for her and made the colic periods less dramatic and they didn't last as long. Many dr's believe colic babies are also dealing with Acid Reflux, which was probably the case with my daughter and maybe the case with your child. She took this until 6 months old.
Finally, what I will say is what I'm sure you've heard a lot- "this will pass." It really and truly will. It will seem overnight that things will be better. In the meantime try to stay calm and patient and love your little one the best you absolutely can and remember they're not being difficult on purpose.
My daughter is so sweet and gentle now, a total angel. Hang in there!

Probably reflux (GERD). I had to eliminate milk/dairy from MY diet- since I was BFing. Going all soy wasnt so bad. It helped some but eventually I had to get him on medication for the reflux. Stopping BFing is almost never the answer- its natures perfect food for babies after all! Hope this helps.

my first son had colic for 5 months. itreied all the remedies and nothing was working. i took him to a natural healer( they do acupuncture, natural oils, massage, etc) he gave me peppermint oil. i mixed 1 drop of peppermint oil with 5 drops of vegetable oil and rubbed it on his tummy and lower back and then wrapped wet warm towels all the way aroung his belly and it was a blessing! it was a complete turn around within a few days! im not sure ifit work for everybody....but it worked for my boy! good luck...i feel for you! =)

I am breastfeeding though.
this is going to sound weird to us "younger" mommies, but i am a HUGE supporter of old school home remedies....let someone else breastfeed your baby. moms used to do it back in the day (i was born in 1980) when they didn't use formula. my mother breastfed all 4 of us kids and if she had to go out or needed to be away from us for a couple of hours, she had to find a woman who was breastfeeding so we could eat. i didn't believe my mom at first until at my father's retirement ceremony, one of their old friends came to town and she told us how her kids were the same age as us and back then moms mainly breastfed and you had to hope you had friends who were breastfeeding too! i also have a friend who's neice was very colicky and she had to breastfeed her neice to help alleviate the sypmtoms.

Hi
My baby had severe colic when he was little until i stopped eating/drinking milk products.
I changed to lactose free milk, joghurts and only eat goats and sheep cheese (they are actually very yummie). I also sometimes gave him Camomilla (a homeopathic remedie, not the tea), fennel tea and warm pads on his belly.
Hope it passes quickly and you have enough nerves to get through it.

Switch formulas to a lactose free or soya formula. Soya if your family has a history of milk allergies and lactose free if there is a history of lactose intolerance. I just heard on the news that only 40% of the worlds population can digest cows milk properly. I know myself and my daughter are part of the 60% who can't due to a protein allergy in milk. I had to switch her to soya formula and in 3 days her colic was over with. I thank god for the doctor who noticed the colic before there was any major signs of it. So find out your family history concerning milk and speak to your doctor about what formula would be best.

my baby girl (8weeks) suffered "colic" most nights from about 1 1/2 weeks old. sometimes from about 6 at night until 11. we found bouncing her while sitting on a fitball helped alot, she sometimes even fell asleep! one night when she was particularly bad, she seemed to want to feed almost all the time. i rang the australian breastfeeding association to see if it was ok to keep feeding and they said she was probably wanting to suck rather than feed so to use a dummy or your clean finger to suck on as they use it as a form of pain relief. alot of web sites we read virtually said that colic doesn't exist but is just babies being sensitive to feeling their digestive system work. but to us it seems very real and it feels like bubs is in alot of pain. sometimes a warm bath works and also massaging tummy in clockwise direction(direction food travels through their system) and just wrapping firmly and bouncing. our daughter is alot better now but still gets it sometimes but for never as long. and they say its usually all gone by 3 months! hope this helps!

My baby girl had colicky periods and it lasted for 6 weeks or so. I understand how exhausting it can be! I had some success with a homeopathic product called Colic Relief made by Brauer Natural Medicine (this is an Australian brand, not sure where you are from - I'm sure there would be similar products in other countries). Small doses are given in liquid form with an eye dropper.
