Conceiving while breastfeeding?

Hi Mamas,

My husband and are are eager to start *trying* for our second baby, #1 (Henry) is almost a year. I don't want to stop nursing, we are both enjoying it and as long as Henry is interested I am happy to continue.

I know it can be more challenging to conceive while breastfeeding, do any of you have experience?

Any, and all, input is greatly appreciated!

Congratulations Catalina!

I got pregnant with our second daughter while still breast feeding our oldest now almost 3. I breastfed my oldest right through my pregnancy, she told me about a week before I gave birth that my milk had gone sour so was obviously becoming colostrum. Didn't have my oldest with me for 2 days while I had her sister, but have fed them both ever since. My milk came back in within 2 days, although I will be honest and say it could be a challenge feeding while pregnant and since sometimes too.

Good luck :)

We conceived our ds while I was still nursing our ds when he was 11 months old, it was a surprise! I'm sure you will have no problem!

Congrats. Keep an eye on the weight gain of the child you are nursing. My milk changed after 4 months being pregnant and I had to put my daughter on formula for 2 months till she turns 1 at the end of this month. I do still nurse her in the middle of the night. Best of luck and God Bless

If you got your period back, you can definitely get pregnant. You also have your first ovulation about two or so weeks before your first period so you can technically get pregnant even if you never got your period yet. All chance, of course. Good luck

YAY! Congratulations Catalina!

I recommend you get the book Adventures In Tandem Nursing by Hillary Flower. It has so much good info on continuing to nurse while pregnant, and on tandem nursing once your baby arrives, and info on deciding if that's really what you want to do.

I am pregnant! Turns out I got pregnant when I had that "one random period and then it went away" :)

I also got pregnant while BFing my then 21 month old. She continued to nurse until 28 months, when she self-weaned. Nursing while pregnant was never a problem for me until the very end, when my son would kick his sister while she was nursing. Sibling rivalry before he was even born :)

I got pregnant with my 2 and now 3rd child while breastfeeding. I also had a cycle after getting pregnant with two kids, so I guess I break many of the standard rules. It definitely can happen!

I got pregnant with my 3rd and 4th child while nursing. It is very tiring and you need to keep your calories up to support both babies. Good luck.

Thank you joy! I have some ebf questions actually, can I shoot them your way?

I'm ebfing a 2.5 year old girl and I'm 2 months pregnant. Most of my family is concerned about it (and they didn't want me ebfing), but it is very possible to do and so far there's no hangups -other than this afternoon when we woke up from nap and I had to use the restroom so badly, but she wanted to nurse so badly. Ended up with a cranky 2 year old, but we're usually alright with it. In about a month I know I'll need to increase my caloric intake to account for both baby & breastfeeding, but so far so good. Good luck with your pregnancy!

Good to know! I would really like to BFing my son until he's at least 2 so I would probably end up tandum nursing. Not sure I'm up for that! :-)

I was breastfeeding my older daughter when we conceived our 2nd. She was already 19 months when I actually got pregnant. Took 2 months of trying, which for me I thought was quick. Only downside was I had to stop breastfeeding her after my 2nd month of pregnancy because my breast became extremely tender and it was unbearable to breastfeed. Some women have no trouble with continuing though. Good luck! ;D

I got pregnant with my 2nd while still breastfeeding my 1st. My cycles returned around 14 months and I got pregnant when my daughter was 20 months.

I had a hard time getting pregnant the first time around, and I didn't really think it was going to happen again until I'd weaned completely, but I was hopeful that when she night weaned I'd be able to get pregnant again. My daughter night weaned at 17 months. It took 3 months after that for me.

My cycle isn't back to normal yet, I've had one very light period 2 months ago. Getting pregnant the first time was quick though so I'm hoping this time is the same!

Check out the info on this site. It starts off with "using breastfeeding to prevent pregnancy" but scroll down and it goes into "do I need to wean to get pregnant"

I got pregnant with my second 6 months after my first was born. My periods were not back to normal or anything (i had 1 depo shot at 6 weeks post partum) and my doc was pretty surprised that I got pregnant so quickyl since he said it usually takes 9 months afater a depo shot to conceive.. My only issue with that of course was that once I was pregnant, my baby no longer wanted my milk (apparently the taste can change or something - not sure exactly what it was, but she refused the breast for a week).

I have gotten pregnant 4 times while EBF. It can happen. Have your cycles returned to normal?
