Decreased milk supply on one side???

My left side has a heck of a time keeping up. Talked with my doctor when my son was roughly 4 months old and she told me to keep feeding on that side to help build up the milk supply. However, this has only made matters worse. He sleeps through the night and gets up around 7A to eat. If I feed him on both sides before he goes down, at 7A my right side could pass as Dolly Parton's double and my left looks "normal" per say. Nursing pads are damp but nothing extreme. I've finally given up on the issue and feed him on the right side exclusively and the left when it decides to catch up. Has anyone else had this problem??

My daughter never really liked feeding on the left side, so eventually I just quit nursing her on that side. After a few months, there wasn't really anything left over there:) I successfully nursed her for three years on just the one side, so I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Eventually, your right side will settle into a routine and not look so Dolly Parton-ish. Nursing your son on both sides may be stimulating your right side to produce even more milk.

It's fairly normal to have a baby favor one side. Always start feeding you baby on the side that feels low. You milk supply only increases when a side is completely emptied.

this happens to me as well.  my daughter is 2 months and when i wake up in the morning my right side is engorged and my left feels 'normal'.  i do favor feeding her on the right side though, i always thought because im right handed but who knows why.  i have tried to feed her more on the left but she gets frusterated that she isnt getting as much so i give in and switch.  now when i pump i can get a bottle full on the right side and only and inch or so on the left bottle.  i have come to settle with the fact that thats just the way its going to be!  loopsidedness is really only in the morning but then when i feed just on the right, they look the same again!

Me too! I have a flatter nipple on the left and although none of my kids preffered that side, my daughter REFUSED to feed from it......... so, I exclusively fed from the right... she is now a healthy happy 3 yr old!!

Maybe there is something wrong with our left side =D lol. My right boob has always looked fuller then my left but i still feed my DS on both sides every 2-3hrs - one side a feed that is and he seems to still look content after each feed.

that happens with me as well!! I was told by a lactation consultant that sometimes you are able to produce more on one side. Then if your baby develops a preference it will just contribute to this. I wouldnt worry (although annoying)

I have nursed all 3 of my kids...and all 3 of them have favored my right side.  I guess my left side is a bit inverted, and harder to nurse from...although...I think kid #1 paved the way, because #2 and #3 never had a hard time latching onto the left side like #1 did.  :)  With #3, I will try and give her the left side as much as possible, because i don't want to be lop-sided, but there are times that she just gets frustrated, (and so do i), that I just let her nurse on the right side, so that she can settle down and go to sleep.

I think the best thing to do is to keep giving them as much equal time as possible...my lactation consultant told me that it is possible to just exclusively feed from one side, and that the other side would just dry up...but then, yes, you would be lop-sided....so I have always tried to avoid this.  I only had the issue bad enough with #1 to think about only nursing from the right side...#2 and #3 have done fine with both, even though they favor the right side.  Good luck!

Yes, with my first baby. I'm nursing my fourth now and practice makes perfect. It might be that he perfers the right side. My best advice is that your doing the right thing. I'm much more relaxed and patient then I used to be with nursing. It could also be the way he's latching onto the left side, but he probably perfers the right. For me nursing is the best part of being a mother so I just laughed about it and decided it wasn't worth the worry. If he's happy and healthy thats all that matters. If you want some really good expert advice talk to your local La Leche Leader. You can find them online. Good luck hun.
