Defrosting breastmilk

What is the proper way to defrost breastmilk? I tried defrosting it in the refrigerator, that didn't work, over 24 hours later the bulk of it was still frozen. I've also tried defrosting it on the counter, that works but it also causes my daughter to have massive blowouts (big BM) so I figure that's not right either.

Put it in a pot of warm water...easy and quick. But only take out as much as you need. Defrosted brest milk only last for 24 hours in the fridge...

I place the storage bag in a cup and let warm water run over it for a bit. Then I take it out and move the milk around so I can break up any ice thats left and then let some more warm water run over it. That works for me.

@Gina mellor...different sources will tell you different guidelines...i use the 555 rule that my hospital told me to follow, 5 hours at room temp, 5 days in the refrigerator, and 5 months in the freezer. if you have a deep freeze i believe it can last a year, and if you have an icebox compartment inside the fridge i think it can last 2 weeks.

I freeze mine a few ounces at a time. mostly because I can only pump and ounce or two at a time lol, then it easily defrosted in the fridge or under cool running water.

Yes, the others are right, under warm water. Which is why you should always freeze it in small amounts so that you are not wasting any of it. If you have bulk amounts still in the freezer, you could try to break them up while they are still frozen (maybe with the back end of a butter knife or something) and then put them into smaller bags so that you are only defrosting what you need at each time. It usually took me less than a minute to defrost a full feeding of 5 or 6 ounces under warm water.

yes, you'd have to give it to her right away.

also, you could try turning the temp down in your refrigerator...that way it will defrost in the fridge (its only good for 24 hours in the fridge) and you can warm it when she needs it.

Hmm may have to try that but I thought you couldn't reheat milk once you already heated it once? If I used that method I would have to give it to my daughter immediately right?

I always filled a glass or dishpan with warm water and put the bag of milk into it and let it thaw that way.

run warm water over it. the key is warm, not hot. once it is defrosted it needs to be used within the hour
