Hi

This is the first time I have defrosted frozen expressed milk. I set one bottle out to gradually defrost at room temp and another bottle I microwaved (making sure there were no hotspots before feeding of course). In both cases the milk seemed to be full of bits which blocked up the bottle teat. Is this normal? Also, am I defrosting it in the correct/safe manner?

its fatty contents of the milk. and microwaving breast milk zaps it of its nutrients. i usually heat water up and stick a bottle of milk in the hot water. the hospital told me to do this

I am guessing you just didn't warm it enough, sometimes there can be little fat globs if it is cooler tham body temp, however you shouldn't microwave it because it basically "kills" the milk so you should just get a cup with warm water and thaw it in that, you may need to reheat the water a couple of times but it will thaw it. :)

Thanks both of you. You are right I didn't heat it up very warm because it was for a night time feed and I wasn't sure when she would wake so I wanted it to be fresher but I'll have to warm it more thoroughly next time. I won't microwave it in future I'll use the hot water method. Great advice, thanks :-)
