Diaper blow out

I am having a problem with my 5 month old. He has a blow out 1-3 times a day. Sometimes he'll wake in the morning with a huge mess. I don't know what to do. I read somewhere to try cloth diapers. I tried them and he still makes a mess. I've tried standing him up, that works, but I can't always be there when he poops. If anyone has any advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I had issues with blow outs for a while, too. What a mess. I like the Huggies Natural fit. My son is also in size 3 diapers. These seem to fit him the best, and now that he's walking, they still keep everything in!

Hi! My son had issues with pooping a lot too. Once we started incorperating rice into his diet, the blowout slowed, but changing brands of diapers worked the best. You can go to most of the major brands websites or call the 800# and ask for free samples in the size you need. Then you don't have to waste your money on a box of diapers that will ultimatlely fail. Luvs ended up working the best for me, but it's differant for every baby. I have friends who only swear by Pampers and some that love Huggies. It's all about the baby!! Good luck!

Is your son pretty regular?  Does he give clues about when he is going to poop?  I started putting my daughter on the toilet when she was about a month old (she is regular) and now she will pee and poop in the toilet most mornings.  Other than that I recomend Pampers Cruisers.  Good luck.

The best disposables we've found are the Huggies Supreme. They only leak up the back sometimes if you make sure the flaps around the butt are out. Pampers Swaddlers/Cruisers leaked everywhere. Pampers Baby Dry up the back every time. Huggies Snug n' Dry out the legs 50% of the time. Luvs were useless. He might well not have had a diaper on. This was just our experiences, hope this helps.

My kids all did that major explosive blowout too!  However, my 1st and 3rd would wait days between pooping, so it wasn't as hard for me to manage the mess, especially if I noticed right away.

I know this doesn't help in the short term, but his poops will get thicker when you start solids.  Looks like the other moms have diaper suggestions for you, can't add anything myself.  Just know that you only have a short couple of months or so until they stop being so liquid.  Unfortunately they also get much stinkier at the same time :P

When we started having blow outs I was confused too, then a nice lady at the library with 4 kids suggested moving up a diaper size. I felt like an idiot. that totally fixed it! That was with Disposables. I didn't do cloth till baby 2. Good luck!

If you've had the same problem with cloth, maybe the waist/leg adjustments weren't snug enough. I know it's difficult sometimes to get the right fitting around their chubby legs/waist, but once that happens, messes should be at a minimum. My daughter has been in cloth for a year now and we've never had a blow out- except for once when the diaper was put on cock-eyed. I just always make sure theres a very snug fit- and you won't be hurting them if its snug (like some people think).

Thanks for the advice.  I've been using the Pampers Baby Dry.  I will have to try the cruisers next time.

I have a four month old with the same problem. Trying a larger diaper did not do it for me. Different diapers have different cuts, right now the Pampers cruisers are doing the trick. The spray and wash dual works great at getting the stains out of diaper shirts... good luck!

I'm just worried that a bigger diaper won't fix it because he's in size 3 and the tabs still meet.  I'm afraid if we went to a 4 that it would just go up the back even more because it wouldn't fit to his back.  We just bought a new box of size 3.  Maybe after this one we will try size 4.

We had a similiar problem with my son.  We resolved it by moving to a large sized diaper.  We used both cloth and disposables and moving to a larger size helped in both scenarios.

Try a different kind of cloth diaper. I've used both with my kids and always find that the disposable diaper blow-outs are much worse than the cloth diaper ones. Other than that... maybe try trying to catch him right before he poops? I started my third pooping in the potty around 6 months, and now at 12 months she's starting to tell me when she needs to go. I started with my second around 13 months, and she quit pooping in her diaper on her own around 18 months... she just preferred to poop in the potty.
