Are nursing covers worth the expense? Or is a lightweight, breathable baby blanket just as effective?

I've used both and I love my cover because of the strap around the neck. My 7 month old is constantly pulling and tugging on it and if it was a regular blanket he would have pulled it down plenty of times!

I liked mine for 2 reasons. First, they keep the cover away from the babies face while nursing, and 2nd the strap around the neck does help keep it in place.

But a lightweight baby blanket can and does work very well for many women.

I have always just used a receiving blanket. I just cover the exposed part of my breast not my babies. However, you can definitely nurse discretely with out a cover too, although that does take some practice. With my first, she was 4months or older before I stopped covering but then it was easier to do with out. My son was easy from the beginning and I only cover if I'm worried about the comfort level of others. So I personally don't think they are worth the money.

It's totally up to you...You don't even have to have a cover or a blanket. You can nurse discreetly without blankets and/or nursing covers.

Having said that, if you feel more comfortable with a cover, you could even make your own.
