I need to get on some antibiotices for some skin issues, and my doctors have all said it is safe for my son who I am currently breastfeeding but is it really safe? he just got off of amoxicilin for an ear infection that has now cleared up.

A repeat of what others are saying. Doctor knows you are nursing but prescribes it, should be fine. Read the insert. Ask the pharmacist for added reassurance.

That said...AVOID THRUSH! eat tons of yogurt (acidophilus, bifidus depending on your tolerance for cow milk protein)

I know they say it is safe, but everything you eat and/or drink gets into your milk. Everything. If you have to take it, do it, but if there's any way you can put it off until after your baby is done breastfeeding, I would do it. I don't think it will be horrible for your child, but he probably will get some of it, regardless of how careful you are.

yes, it is ok. I have 4 kids and have nursed them all. When I got sick I had to take antibiotices.

I believe some are safe. You just have to make sure you are taking the right dose. I had an infection when I was breastfeeding and took antibiotics. However, my son did act more fussy. I'm not sure if it was due to my antibiotics or not.

There are different "levels" of antibiotics, based on strength. I used to work in Dermatology and I honestly can't think of any 'high level' antibiotics being prescribed by our doctors.

I'll just 'bump' the advice the other ladies gave: LOTS of water and nurse on demand.

I hope your skin clears soon!

I took antibiotics while still in hospital after having my daughter and again a week later. There were no effects on the baby.

Quoting Anna:

...you have to drink lots of water or it will affect your milk supply if you get dehydrated.

I also had to take anti botics while bf'ing and my doc assured me it was safe as long as, like Anna said, you don't let yourself get dehydrated. Also make sure you continue to feed on demand to help proctect your milk supply.

FYI, The baby was fine and suffered no side effects, I'm sure your baby will be fine to.

I had to take 2 types while nursing for the first week of my son's life. I read the fact sheets that came with the pills and one type said 'not for use in pregnancy/breastfeeding' but I trusted the obstetrician wouldn't have prescribed them if they were dangerous. It didn't have any bad effects on my baby that I could tell.

But some types can give you diarrhea so you have to drink lots of water or it will affect your milk supply if you get dehydrated.
