Does anyone else have irregular periods while breastfeeding?

[deleted account] ( 14 moms have responded )

My son is 7 months. We started him on solids about 6 weeks ago. I got my period when he was 5 months but its been 8 weeks now and it hasn't returned. I've taken a pregnancy test and it was negative. Should it be this irregular? Does any one else have experience with irregular periods while breastfeeding? (This didn't happen with his older sister, now 3 years old).

With my son, I had one at 6 months, 12 months, 18 months and then every 6-8 weeks after that until he fully weaned and they went back to the normal 28 days.

Quoting Tracy:

Sometimes you can have your period while breastfeeding if you've gone too long without feeding the baby...like if the baby sleeps through the night. Most women dont have periods as long as they breastfeed. So if you have just had one period, try to remember if you went a long time engorged. It has to do with your hormones. Hope this helped!

I would just like to point out that getting your period while breastfeeding doesn't necessarily mean you went a long time with out nursing.  I exclusively nursed (no supplements or solids) around the clock, on demand for 8 months and then got my period.  Some people nurse the same way and get it after a couple months.  Every woman is different and every nursing experience is different.  Yes, it is true that if you go a while with out nursing it can in fact bring on ovulation which can then bring on period, unless you get pregnant of course! (LOL).  So going with out nursing can cause it but just because you got your period doesn't always mean that you went too long with out nursing.  Some won't get it for years while nursing, others months.  It just depends.

My son is 13 months. I have not had a period. Every woman is different. What your cycle is like is dependant on your nursing pattern and your individual hormone levels. We sorta fell into a pattern most reassembling ecological breastfeeding if that helps at all. I have started my son on a sippy cup though as I would like to have another baby and breastfeeding has kept me infertile.

So after postpartum bleeding for 4 weeks I had random spotting for about 2 weeks and then 2 weeks later had a normal period for 5 days which was a normal period for me before I was pregnant. Since then I've yet to get a period and my son is now 5 months old. I have breastfed him the whole time and also pump when needed as well. Is this normal has anyone experienced this or should I be going out to buy a pregnancy test?

My daughter is 15 months old and I've had maybe 4 or 5 periods since she was born. I wouldn't stress about it. :o)

I jsut didn't want anyone to think that they had gone too long with out feeding their baby if they got their period if they read your post wrong. ;)

I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to say that it always means that. I was just telling you what my lactation consultant said.

I got my first period when my son was 6 weeks old. And now they seem to be about every 6 weeks or so.

With both of my children I resumed my period at 10mths. After my 1st it was very regualr, but after my 2nd child it was very irregular. anywhere from 4-8wks. If you're not sure you can call your OB and get a blood test to confirm if you are pregnant.

It can vary child top child and mother to mother. Just depends. Even one night of extended nursing can throw things off.
