My ped gave me a prescription for vitamins. He said that breastfed babies don't get enough vitamin D and flouride! I believe that breastmilk has everything the baby needs. Do I need to give him vitamins also??

Most people and therefore babies get vit D from sun light not diet. For most babies if you are eating well they get everything they need from breastmilk even iron (which is usually what they try and prescribe) which although in lower quantities than formula is in a form much easier to absorb.

That's a pretty bold blanket statement to say that breastfed babies don't get enough vitamin D and Fluoride. I hardly think that all of mammalia would have been so successful if breastfeeding wasn't sufficient for the health and growth of its young.

I would be careful with fluoride- it can cause staining and damaging of teeth- and if you have fluoridated city water once baby is old enough for solids some sips mooched here and there will be enough. Fluoride is not a necessary thing- so it's not a true statement that babies don't get enough of it. According to the AAP:

"Fluoride should not be administered to infants during the first 6 months after birth, whether they are breast- or formula-fed. During the period from 6 months to 3 years of age, breastfed infants (and formula-fed infants) require fluoride supplementation only if the water supply is severely deficient in fluoride (

this is true. breastfed babies don't get enough vit d and flouride some how it does not make it to the milk. formula fed babies have it added to the formula so they don't need any extra vitamins. there are otc vitamin drops that i use for my daughter. i just bought them at walmart i think. they are a multi-vit that you can add to bottles of milk or just administer it alone.
