My son is just about 5 months old. He claws my breast, chest, neck, chin and whatever he can a hold of he pinches. Ouchie!!! He also likes to occasionally clamp down on my breast and pull himself off. I still LOVE the cuddle of breastfeeding over any of the pain he gives me.

My 3 1/2 month old baby girl does the same thing, and it can really sting! I read in a magazine that without a "security" item to hold onto such as a piece of a blanket or a toy if they're old enough then babies will hold onto their mommys for security. I haven't put it to the test yet and tried to give her a piece of a soft blanket, but I think I'm going to, to see if the pinching and scratching stops.

yes lol. my daughters 9months old and she likes to hold my hair and pull on my face/ lip mostly. i think its cutee. although i have goten scrathes.

Yes my 7 and half month baby girl has now got two bottom teeth and is bitting when she is had enough and pinches my neck when i burp her.I dont know if its a baby thing but everyone i have spoken to have said so.

It is how I know when I need to do her nails :-) I think I get more scratches than she does. I have found it is not as much when she is feeding, she tends to run her hand up and down my breast when feeding. but when we are playing, she likes to grab, so she will grab a handful of hair on each side when I go to give her a kiss... The other thing she does is eye gouges.... they hurt :-D

Yes, my son does that too.....my breast have scratches everywhere!!!!
and now he often bite my nipple ... sometimes a few blooding ... and i want to cry ...
but when i think he just a little baby and how i and my husband and his sister wants him so much ... i forget the pain ... hehehehe

I was given a great Christmas give because of this exact issue. It's a nursing necklace that's made of different sizes and shapes of colourful beads that baby can play with while nursing.

That is funny, my son used to claw and pinch my boob. So much that I had little scratches on it! They even bled. Hurt like heck and I had to cover the scratches with band aides until they all healed.

I used to work in a day care and a lot of the babies liked to pinch and pull hair when being fed as well, I would have to make sure all my hair was back and that I wasn't wearing a necklace when feeding them!

My daughter grabs hold of my bra strap otherwise she scratches or punches my breasts. I keep her nails short but can;t do much about the puching except trying to give her my bra strap instead.

YES! Im glad to know Im not the only mom one being abused at meal time. My son also does this to his dad too whenever I pump and have to leave dad to feed him. Ive just learned to hold his little hand whenever possible

Yes, my lil girl shes 7 1/2 mths and she pinches my arm and scratches my chest. i have scratch marks all over. my son didnt do this when i breastfed him. but i guess every child is different.

You guys all need to try Mommy Necklaces! They have a fan site on facebook too! I have a bunch, and I swear they saved my sanity and my boobs! My son's now 23 months old and we still use them. oh my god. my 9.5 month old son does pretty much all of the descriptions!!! he pulls at my hair, ears, nose, mouth, digs at my gums, sticks his thumb in his mouth right alongside my nipple, pulls off and pinches the nipple, then latches on again, i have marks all over my face and boobs from him! definitely looking at the nursing necklaces! because im getting alot of funny looks from people at school due to the bruises! oh and the leg has to be sitting on the boob hes not nursing from - strang but hilarious!

my 8 month old slaps and hits during breastfeeding. he also pulls on my necklace or my bra strap (probably why all my bra straps are stretched out and fall down alllll day long) I'm sure it's a normal thing for breastfeeding babies. maybe it comforting or maybe it's just plain boredom!! lol!!

My son, who is 5 Months now, started grabbing a handful of boob a couple of weeks ago. At about the same time, he started flinging his arm around, so now he's either flinging it around, reaching for my face, hair- he just sort-of passes his hand back and forth through my hair- or grabbing a fistful of skin.

My son did the same from around 10 months right up to 17months. Actually any of my skin on my belly or neck would get pinched and clawed by him. I even had scratch marks at times, so I always tried to keep his nails short. He then discovered his belly button, and now that he is weened to a bottle, he lies drinking his bottle pinching his own belly button skin. I guess its just a soothing thing that they'll eventually outgrow...

Yes, my baby is 1 1/2 and I breastfeed her only for comfort and to sleep. My breastfed baby likes to pinch my skin sometimes, I tell her 'no' but I believe this is a comforting and instinctive reflex. Yes, my baby sometimes grabs my neck, I acted like she was choking me as a joke, LOL! ;D I believe the clawing or grabbing is their way of 'not letting go' of their secure need in order to get to a peaceful sleep.

yeah, i was wondering the same thing. it hurts! im glad someone else said something. lol i hope this is just a short faze. She claws, pinches, squeezes, my breasts, shoulders, arms, neck and face. I have tried to get her to stop but she just keeps doing it. Im thinking its like when a cat claws at things when you are petting them.

Hahahaha, good question!! My little 3 1/2 month Chunky Monkey does a pumping action with his one arm like he's repeatedly punching me and sometimes he'll slap at me. He's been doing this since pretty much the beginning. I'm getting a little worried though because he's a big boy and can pack a hit so I can just imagine the bruising I will get when he gets older.

I thought we were the only ones! My daughter pinched until she was about 2 and stopped breastfeeding at 18 months. While my 16 month old likes pulls out a hair and wrap it around her finger while nursing. Hopefully that will pass too.

Yes! My son claws my eyes, my hair, my neck anything he can reach. Rather irritating I will admit. It seems to somehow soothe him though. I've taken to pulling my shirt up over my face to protect myself!

my son is a kneader, he kneads and strokes the boob while he eats unless hes sick or upset then he pinches and scratches in a frenzy to get food quicker. I think when they are younger it's a natural instict that help them develop some of their motor reflexes.

Yes she is very wriggly and scratches when feeding, which is why she is always put in a 'Swaddle Me' during feeding.

Yes. In fact he ripped a skin tag off the other day so I went and had the other removed. He likes to pick at any moles I have as well. But what bugs me the most is when he tries to pick my nose or he digs at my teeth and gums.

My 1 year old does that. He also puts his leg over the other breast and he tries to play with the other nipple and twists it like it's a dial on a radio. I guess it never bothers me too much except when I'm trying to sleep. I would try to distract him with something and definitely keep his nails cut!

My son is 9 wekks old, breastfed only, and he does that all the time! I have little scraps and scabs on my chest and neck. It is like a little kitten stretching his claws to make himself comfy. :)

My little guy does that when my breast start to empty, as one of the mom's said I end up with marks all over my breasts. I would say its normal for breastfed babies to do it, I wouldn't worry about it.

Lise, where do you find a "nursing necklace"? I've never heard of one. Sounds like a great idea. I always wonder if people are looking at me like... what the heck happened to you.... when I'm out. If I wear anything v-neck you can see all the little bruises all over my breast from my little one pinching me.

My little Miss charlie puts her feet in my neck and tries to put them in my mouth every time we feed! It is sooooooo funny,now when she does it I pretend to bite her toes, she loves it, and yes her hands are always either clawing at my boob or neck, i think maybe it is a security thing?
