Has anyone ever taken domperidone and made your menstrual period stop? Mine stopped after a month of taking it. Anyone experience this?

Thanks all. I just wanted to let u know yes I have also felt bloated and weird especially on the full dose but i have weaned myself to a 3 tab a day dose. My Nicky gave up at 3 mths but I have persevered with Neil and he is 7 and a half months old. Whenever I feel the supply drops I just bump the dose . I have also prescribed it to a number of women all with good results. Good luck and hope u enjoy feeding for as Long as u wish! :))

I just wanted to say that I've been on Domperidone for 4 weeks now and I've felt pg for the last 3! I've had all the symptoms I normally get, can't keep my eyes open after 11pm(usually go to sleep around 12:30ish), hungry, wild *ahem* dreams, moody, other than nausea I would swear I'm pg (taken lots of tests so I know I'm not). I was talking to a friend about this and it seems to coincide with the dom so I assume its the prolactin wrecking havoc on my hormones :) I haven't had a period yet so as far as stopping a cycle it would make sense with the increase in prolactin.

I just wanted to say, after all the struggles and trying everything for 3 months (started dropping when son was about 4 months) its so wonderful to have a normal supply again. It really has been a miracle for me and I'm thrilled I'm going to get past a year with breastfeeding.

That's great, Roxi. Is it helping your supply? Only you and your lactation consultant could make the decision when you need that last resort. And I'm assuming you got it from a reputable source. Concerned (AK) Mum has explained the reason for your periods stopping.

All the best.

The following information is derived from Medication and Mothers’ Milk, ‘10 edition, by Thomas Hale, PhD:

"The US FDA issued a warning on this product stating that it could induce arrhythmias in patients. These claims were derived from data many years old where domperidone was used intravenously as an antiemetic during cancer chemotherapy (20 mg stat followed by 10 mg/kg/24 h). Many of these patients were undergoing extensive chemotherapy and were extremely ill, and hypokalemic to begin with. Further, intravenous domperidone produces plasma levels many times higher than oral use. Thus far, we do not have any recently published data suggesting domperidone used orally in breastfeeding mothers is arrhythmogenic, although its use in women who are already arrhythmic is not recommended."

I agree with Concerned(AK) Mom, that it is for the treatment of arrythmias that it has some cardiac arrest side effect. And when it is taken intravenously.

Thanks for the info, Kathy and Concerned(AK).
I got Domperidone OTC here in Kuwait. And yes, it was my last resort. I've tried pumping every two hours and nursing in between but it's adding on the stress I am already in, that's why the milk supply went down. Fenugreek doesn't work with me. Non alcoholic beer (barley malt), oatmeal, ginger, basil work but very minimum result. As for the other herbs, I'm not sure if they are available here. We're just new in this country.
So I've asked my OB Gyne and Medela lactation consultant about Domperidone. My OB gave me a go signal on it. And the Medela Lactation Consultant says it is an L1 Lactation Risk Category. So I shouldn't have a problem with that.
Maximum amount I take everyday is 30mg divided by 3 intakes of 10mg.

I understand that in the US some people get domperidone from online companies and from compounding pharmacies. There could therefore be doubts about the purity of the drug.

It's a strong drug, used in the treatment of nausea and vomoting. An increase in breast milk supply is a side effect. It should be used only as a last resort, so perhaps, Roxi, you should be discussing with your(board certified) lactation consultant other methods of increasing your supply.

I am in aus as well, and yes u do need a prescription.. Having said that lot of drugs are used in pregnancy and lactation off label. It is simply because the pharm. Companies do not want to spend the money doing trials in every country... Nifedipine is an example . But I di agree people shud not get any drug willy nilly.

Domperidone
Audience: Consumers and healthcare professionals

FDA warned healthcare professionals and breastfeeding women not to use an unapproved drug, domperidone, to increase milk production (lactation). The agency is concerned with the potential public health risks associated with domperidone. FDA took these actions because it has become aware that some women are purchasing this drug from compounding pharmacies and from foreign sources. Although domperidone is approved in several countries outside the U.S. to treat certain gastric disorders, it is not approved in any country, including the U.S., for enhancing breast milk production in lactating women and is also not approved in the U.S. for any indication.

That's why it's important to get a prescription. I'm in Australia. Domperidone is only available on prescription.

The FdA warning regarding arrythmias is only on high doses. The lactation inducing dose of a max of 8 tabs- 2qid is safe for both mum and baby

Roxi, did the doctor actually give you a prescription? Just a bit concerned, as the FDA has issued warnings, and in Australia it's only available on prescription.
