I heard that if you drink beer it will increase your milk supply. Anybody know if this is true? Do you know how much you should drink and how often and is there any particular type that is better than others? I thought you shouldn't drink if BF. Just curious. Thanks!

also, you do not need to pump and dump as alcohol leaves breast milk at the same rate your blood alcohol level drops (the amount is different, the rate is the same) the only reason to pump and dump is is mom feels engorged while intoxicated.

this is an old wives tale that has NOT been researched enough to be backed by any scientific evidence. Many of the herbal supplements and teas haven't been studied either, but at least they are not risking harm to the baby from alcohol. I would recommend fennel, or teas made with fennel as that is a natural herb.

Thanks everyone for the information. I was curious and glad to hear that you guys are super informed! I did read from Dr. Sears that if you hae one alcoholic beverage and wait an hour it's fine. I've been nursing my toddler for three years now and tandem nurse him with my four month old. I think i've had four beers in all of that time. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing... not missing much anyway, right? THanks again!!

this is completely false - what happens is the baby has less of a feed because the alcohol makes them sleepy, hence you feeling fuller after the feed.
If you feel the need to have alchol to relax while breastfeeding, please time it so the bub doesnt get alcoholic breast milk* OR express enough for bub to have a feed or two while you are under the influence and then express and dump any alcoholic milk
* - there are formula to work out how long your body takes to break down the alcohol depending on your weight/height and how many drinks - http://breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/index... has links to the formula and lots of other info about breastfeeding

I also think it's the yeast that helps increase milk supply, but there are plenty other options that I'd try first...
The alcohol in the beer isn't good for baby, even if only one beer a day it's a huge challenge for the baby's liver.

it isn't the beer itself that helps milk supply, its the brewer's yeast that is in beer. i know you can buy just the brewers yeast and mix it in with other food/beverages but i'm not sure if it really does help to increase supply.

Apparently, back in the 80s, they used to give beer to new moms to help with the milk production. I'm not sure this is entirely a good idea, but one beer certainly won't do any harm.

I've heard this too but I don't think it's true. Most people say that alcohol is actually supposed to decrease your supply and additionally, drinking more than two beers while feeding a child under three months can be too much for their immature liver. I would stick to one beer while your child is under 3 months.
