The role is pumping should no hurt so, if it hurts check the suction. The suction may be up to high. You might also need a better fitting flanges. They make different sizes to fit your breasts.

Check the suction strength you have the pump on. Usually you can change it (like on the Medela electric). If you have and you feel like the pumping hurts still, change the breast shield to a bigger one. I got blisters from my pump and after searching on the net (on Medela's website) I went and got a shield that was one size bigger and RELIEF!!!

What kind is it? I returned to work with both of my children so I had to pump also.. (Currently am pumping for my 9 week old). I had an evenflo for my daughter and it recently died and I bought a 'mi pump' from walmart. it's made by 'the first years' .. They're both electric, but I really love this new one. It's soo quiet (When I'm at work, I pump in my office and I can even answer my phone and nobody knows .. it's that quiet!) I really don't know about the blood.. I always thought the pumps were gentler..
