My son was born Dec 11th 2009 and he was unable to latch properly. I exclusively pumped breastmilk for him and fed him by bottle until he was 1 month old and then I saw a lactation specialist and with the help of a hand pump and nipple shield he started nursing on the breast in addition to the bottle feedings. After almost 6 long weeks of struggling he finally got it on this week and started nursing on both breasts with no shield or contraptions needed. I just want to say if you're struggling, don't give up, your baby will eventually get it, and when he or she does you'll be so grateful you stuck with it.

I was similar, I have flat nipples so my baby couldnt latch either. I was cup and syringe feeding colostrum in hospital until my milk came in then was using a nipple shield which i hated it filled with milk and fell off and blah!

i was ready to give up and i admit to trying to get bub onto formula, but she wouldnt even open her mouth again once she tasted it! thank goodness!

so i saw a lactation consultant and she was brilliant, now at nearly 8weeks and i have no problems!

I heard of one mum who had such a low supply her baby was very sick and started losing weight! she was so determined to breasfeed instead of giving formula supplements out of a bottle the ABA got her a "supply lung" which (i dont know exactly how it works) but it attached to her chest and when the baby sucked she was getting formula as well as breastmilk, so she didnt starve, it also was building her supply as she gradually lowered the amount of formula going into it! now she breastfeeds perfectly well 10 months later! thats inspiration!

Good on all mums for doing whats best for their babies!!!!

I went through a lot of trouble for the first few months and I stuck it out...I am so glad. My son is 8 months now and breastfeeding is so rewarding.
