My son just turned two and stopped nursing 5 days ago. He had previously been nursing at bedtime and in the morning. He has handled the transition wonderfully, but my body hasn't been so happy about it. I am horribly engorged and have developed huge, painful clogged ducts. What can I do?

I'm trying to put together a 'list' of things to do, I'm trying to wean my 22 month old.... first of all i want to cut out all daytime nursing completely for a few weeks.... I want to eat/drink things to dry up milk.... thanks for the advice of sage tea... I also heard before that mint and parley also lessen the amount of milk you produce... I also want to try the hot showers and cabbage leaves. Anyone have any more tips?

I pumped a very small amount a couple of days ago and I am feeling MUCH better. I think the flow is already slowing. I haven't tried the sage tea, but I did put cabbage leaves in my bra. It may have just been the cool cabbage on my swollen breasts, but it really did seem to help. I read somewhere that the chemicals in cabbage can help reduce your milk supply. In any case, thank you to everyone for the kind words and advice.

I had that problem too. Pump enough to relieve yourself but not too much or your body will think he's still nursing. How is Aidan doing

Your replies seem very helpful.. I just wanted to let you know, that if you happen to pump to relieve yourself and still have substantial amounts of milk, you can freeze them and donate them to The Mother's Milk Bank in your area. I live in Ohio and donated about 600 ounces (not all at the same time) to the milk bank in Columbus. I had sooo much milk left over after I weaned my son and my lactation nurse suggested this. It helps many babies and even cancer patients I hear. Just thought it might interest you. GOOD LUCK to ya!!

My mom swears by hot showers to let your milk run without stimulating your nipples to cure severe engorgement/clogged ducts without increasing your milk supply. Also, drink less fluid than you normally do. She weaned 4 kids and taught breastfeeding class so I guess she knows... hope it helps!!

be very carefull to watch your body you need to pump until you are comfortably engorged no more just comfortably full engorged so not in pain.so you dont develop mastitis drink sage tea all day for couple weeks get fresh sage and place in pan simmer on low then cover for 10-20 minutes then after un cover and drink the tea.

Also peppermint oil will help buy a huge amount of peppermint altioids and make sure ingrediants list peppermint oil eat as many as you can daily this will help decrease your supply take care of your self if you get red patches and may start to get weak you have developed mastitis be careful at this stage when trying to dry up.
