Sorry moms, this may be to much info but I am kind of freaking out here. My son is 4 months old now and I think I just got my first period after giving birth to him. But this is nothing like any period I have experienced before. I am going thru a tampon in less than an hour. The flow is soooo heavy and bright red. I didn't bleed like this after he was born, or during my periods before him. Is it normal to bleed so much in your first period after birth or should I call my OB?

I gave birth to my twins via c section on 10/23/11. Next week, they're going to be 10 months old.
For the past month and a half or so I've been having on and off light bleeding where I would wear a liner, sometimes a regular pad. Starting yesterday I've been seeming some major clotting. I called my OB/GYN but, they're closed. I could dial "0" for an emergency, but is this an emergency?

I haven't bled like this since my miscarriage in October 2010. :(
I know that I'm not pregnant, and haven't been since giving birth.
But, reading these posts, made me see that this might be my body's final "push" if you will of my lining which must have been pretty thick. Thankfully, at this time I have no cramping or pain. I was feeling a bit "light headed" yesterday. Probably my lack of iron from the blood. So, I was taking it easy yesterday.

I'm normally very irregular which made getting pregnant hard to begin with.
I'll call the Dr. again Monday. Thank you all for helping put my mind at ease in the meantime.

My son is 15 months old and I breastfed him and still do, I just received my first period after pregnancy 3 days ago and man oh man it is heavy, I actually think its heavier than when i gave birth to him, but i am sure it normal to have this since your body is basically adjusting to finally getting back to normal, I have had 6 boys and this is the first time i have gone this long without a period but if i recall my 4th son i went a few months and the same thing happened I had a heavy flow, maybe not this heavy ;( lol but i'm sure its fine, however, if your still concerned it doesn't hurt to call the doc. Good luck!

I would probably call the OB just to make sure that everything is alright. My little one just turned six months old today and I still haven't experienced my first period after pregnancy. Kind of nervous to see what it is like. With my son it came back normal, but everything that has revolved around my daughter has been different! Hope everything goes well!

I agree about calling your OB to be sure. I just had my first period after giving birth (over 10 mos since daughter was born). However it was really light & almost brownish, but still lasted my usual 7 days. Not sure what to expect with my next one but would really love to keep these lighter periods. I hope everything is okay with you - let us know what you find out.

MY first 5 periods after giving birth to my last baby were horrible. Very heavy on the 4th &5th days and the cramps were awfull. I also had blood flow aches in my legs where I had to wear surgical stockings again. All I can say is that it does get back to "normal".

My first period after giving birth was extremely heavy and crampy and painful. They gradually got back to normal after that, but it took 2 or 3 months, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It sounds like its pretty common for the first period to be pretty awful!

My first period after pregnancy started 7 1/2 months after my DD was born. It came back with a vengeance!! Super heavy very crampy I would have to change my pad every hour and when I did it would be soaked. My normal periods generally last about 4 days but that first one last 7 days and was heavy through the fifth day. I have had two periods since then and this last one was back to normal. If you think something is wrong then definitely call, hope everything is ok!

My first period after pregnancy was when my daughter was 7 months and believe me it came back with REVENGE lol. It was horriable and heavy the cramps also felt like I was in labor again.. But my period is now back to normal 5 months later.

I'm in the same 'boat'. It's been 4 months since I had my baby and my period just started. It was very heavy and lasted longer than usual.

I'm not sure if it's normal or not. Definitely call your doc if you suspect something is wrong though. I felt fine otherwise, just wanted to let you know that the same exact thing happened to me when I got my first period after giving birth.

Be well :)

what size tampon is it? i would call just to be on the safe side, especially if you've never had a period this heavy. bright red can be normal, but the flow sounds too heavy to me.

calling to ask if this is normal for your first period after pregnancy wouldn't hurt...if you can't get a hold of your doctor i would ask to speak to a nurse in the mean time.

Every woman is different. My first period after giving birth was actually lighter than before. I would definitely call the doctor on this one to make sure something else isn't going on.
