My daughters doctor prescribed her fluoride supplements. I was just wondering how important it is, I have been researching it and some websites say DO NOT give it and some say it is fine. All the Dr. told us is here she is 6months old and we give all babies this. We are still breastfeeding but have started baby food once or twice a day. Anyone use these or has anyone chose not to?

wow thats scarey, she prob doesn't even have many teeth yet. i got fluride damage on my teeth from to much. has left lines going across. no major but my dentist told me to be careful as to much can be bad.. i personally think they get enough out of the milk that they need to survive. what do other countries do?? i'd leave it.

Fluoride may cause fluoridosis but typically not at the doses the are added to the water supply. Caries is the most common chronic disease in children and the risk of fluoridosis is far outweighed by the risk of caries. My children got supplemented when we lived in a country where there was no fluoride in the water and now we drink city water that has fluoride.

Becky, what kind of filter can filter out fluoride? I've never heard of any that can except for reverse osmosis filters.

Lucky folk that don't have fluoridated water! It's in all the water here and it's tantamount to mass medication. There is way too much, 1000's of times what we need for healthy teeth, in most cities water supplies. We deliberately buy non-fluoridated toothpaste as trying to reduce levels. Check out 'fluorosis' for some details on what happens when a kid gets too uch fluoride at that critical stage of tooth development.

Jess, that's specifically why our doctor prescribed them for us. Most people around here have to give a flouride supplement since we all have our own wells. Last time I didn't think it was that important, however, I definitely learned my lesson. Good Luck!!

Like you Leslie, we live in the country so we don't have fluoride in our water either. I am petrified of the dentist so I don't really want Campbell to start off with bad teeth!

Well, I say it depends. For example, we live in the country and don't have city water. Therefore, we don't have flouride in our water. I didn't give my first son the flouride I should have. He had so many cavities- and yes, we brush and have good hygiene when it comes to our teeth. He doesn't drink a lot of juice and all those other things that cause cavities. My husband, myself and oldest son don't have teeth problems. With my daughter, we give 1/2 a dropper of flouride daily. That's equivalent to a "couple of sips". This way we can hopefully avoid any more problems.

Don't give the supplement! They don't need it. And it's really bad for them.

Having some is critical for tooth strength and in utero and infancy is when it makes a difference, but just what is in the water or toothpaste is fine.

I was just at my son's 6month appointment today. His ped said to start giving him a little water (our town supplements it) because it has the flouride in it. I think they just want to get them a little flouride b/c the teeth are starting.

I've never even had this suggested to me! Maybe because our city water is flouridated as well. But our filter filters that out, so we don't give our kiddos any flouride at all. Once my 2 yr. old learns to spit, we'll atart using flouridated toothpaste.

I agree w/using the fluoridated water. I've never supplemented my kids w/fluoride pills nor will I ever. I was a pediatric dental assistant before I became a SAHM & the dr. I worked for also recommended to use fluoridated water instead of supplements. All they really need is a few sips a day to be effective.
