Foods to boost energy without harming breastfeeding?

My baby (my 4th) is 3 months old. She has definitely hit a growth spurt. My question, however, is there anything I can eat/take to help my energy without harming breastfeeding? I was sick with the flu about 3 weeks ago and am struggling with feeling well still. Between the flu, her frequent nursing, and a new cold hitting the family, I am wore out! And of course baby is nursing more frequently because of being sick as well. My appetite is really off so it's been hard getting myself to eat (and drink) some days which I know is not helpful. Any suggestions?

Illness does just suck, Emily! (Thanks for the smile by the way.) I woke up actually feeling hungry today so that's good. I may need more iron as well since I always become anemic during pregnancy and I know illness can make anemia worse, assuming my stores are still low.

I'll have to check out the book and see if it helps any. I'm just tired of being sick (and the entire family sick as well). It's difficult to grab "fast" grocery items as well since we also have special diets here which means, when I'm down, time in the kitchen looks very unappealing. Anyway, it'll be good in the end eventually.

There's really nothing I can think of that would "harm" breastfeeding. Anything you would typically use if you're not breastfeeding, whether that's caffeine, or protein in the form of more meat or dark veggies or nuts, is not going to be harmful to breastfeeding. Illness just sucks, and you just have to give yourself some time to get back into the swing of things.

A really good book on foods to eat while breastfeeding is Mother Food by Hilary Jacobson. It gives recommendations about "food and herbs that promote milk production and a mother's health. With special sections on colic, allergy, depression, weightless, and low milk supply.

I have it and have read parts of it.. but not all of it. My IBCLC carries it to each monthly meeting in case there are questions that come up.

Sorry I don't have a specific answer for you though.
