When my daughter was about a year old I slowed to only one nursing session before bed. It took us 7 years to have her and I weaned to 1 session in order to start my period again and hopefully get pregnant. ANybody have any advice about getting pregnant while still bfing? I finally started my period again and got a confirmed ovulation after the first 3 cycles. My periods are still not regular after 5 cycles. DO I really have to give up breastfeeding alltogether in order to regulate myself?

The answer to that question is no for some people and yes for others.

I had a hard time getting pregnant the first time. It took us 2 years. I started having periods again when my daughter was 13 months old. When she was 17 months old, she started sleeping through the night. I was still nursing her at least 4 times per day. Before and after nap time, at bedtime, and first thing in the morning. I got pregnant when she was 21 months old. I also found it quite painful to nurse her (actually that was my first symptom of pregnancy). I ended up weaning her by 23 months because I just couldn't take the pain of it.

But I do know some women who have had to completely wean their baby before they were able to get pregnant again.

However, since you've confirmed that you're ovulating... it sounds like there's a good chance you won't have to stop nursing completely to be able to get pregnant.

I got pregnant within the first 2 months of trying for my first pregnancy. I wasn't sure if I was going to try again because i had such a difficult pregnancy but i needed to try again. my son was 2 1/2 when i got pregnant again and it became very painful to nurse him. i was willing to deal with it for my son to let him self wean but i would tense up from the pain and my son knew it was hurting me so he weaned himself really quickly then. it was funny a few months before that I had gotten dental surgery and had to stop nursing him for 3 or 4 days because of the pain meds and it was a really difficult time for him. but then he stopped right away when he realized it was hurting me. It only took me 2 months of trying to get pregnant the 2nd time too. I don't know what your fertility is like but you might have to try longer than i did since it took you 7 years to have your first. that being said i would suggest you be sure you are ready to completely wean your daughter if you do get pregnant quickly just in case. i know it is possible to nurse a child through your pregnancy and you shouldn't have to stop nursing just to get pregnant. but everyone is different and you may not be able to continue nursing once you get pregnant again.

I realize this may not be helpful since i didn't really have to really "try" to get pregnant either time. both pregnancies were planned but it only took me 2 month to get pregnant both times. our "trying" was just getting rid of the condoms i never needed to use ovulation kits or fertility drugs.
