Hair Loss after having a Baby... Scary

[deleted account] ( 15 moms have responded )

I have a 3 Month old baby, and my hair has just started falling out heaps. There are loose strands everywhere! Not so bad when I Shampoo but when I brush it and then all the rest of the day it is falling out heaps. Im really scared, but I know it has to be a hormonal thing and Im sure it will get better... just keen to talk to other Mums who might be going through the same thing!!! :)

This is very common! I lost handfuls of hair after my son was born :) and I have fine hair. While pregnant we don't loose very much hair, then we make up for it starting at about three months. You will grow it back and I am happy to say at 19 months postpartum my hair is back to normal and has been for some time :)

My hair has never fallen out as much as it has since I've had my boys, granted it is longer now that with the other two but we find it every where including on the boys! I think it has something to do with hormones etc & you don't seem to loose much while pregnant so it makes up for it after it I guess. Not sure if this helps but yep we find my hair absolutely everywhere!

It is normal, during pregnancy your hair thickens due to hormones and after baby and your hormones change back it falls out. As long as your not actually getting bald spots I wouldn't worry.

Oh it is scary! My son is almost 6 months and it's finally getting slower. But it stinks to feel like a dog! I'd find hair balls of my hair on clothes that went through the wash, when I'd sweep the floor I'd get a big thing of my own hair! It really sucks! But lots of women go through it so no worries. Just make sure you got the drano handy and that you just get used to picking hair off everything all the time. What drove me the most crazy is that even with putting my hair up in a bun or something didn't help one bit. Good luck. :)

It's completely normal, you loose less hair during pregnancy, your body is making up for it! If you have stopped taking prenatals try taking them, might help!

I'm 5 months postpartum and felt like I was going and felt like I was going bald too. (Without trying to sound sales-y at all) I started using a product call Monat that was recommended by a friend. It cut my hair loss by about 75%. Plus it's done so much more for my hair like give it volume balancing the ph. I think it's amazing anyway and it's natural based with botanicals. For hair loss it works penetrating the hair shaft and getting into the follicle to stimulate growth. There's a kids Line too an But I seriously LOVE it!! If anyone wants to give it a try here is my website: monatbloomington.com

I agree it's scary, especially if you don't know that it's normal. The amount of hair that would come out in the shower, or while brushing my hair, or just running my fingers through my hair I could have sworn I could make a wig with..... or maybe even two. I couldn't see how I could loose so much hair and even have any left on my head at all.

Thank you, Lori. My sis-n-law is a RN & she told me the same thing (that the epidural or c-section had nothing to do with my hair loss). She assured me it was all hormonal that she had a friend who gave birth [naturally; no epidural, nada] & she still experienced hair loss. It's just so hard going through losing my hair; it makes me feel self-conscious about my appearance. It's scary because it seems like it won't return when It's happening. :-(

Rita - I had an epidural with both my babies, but no c-section. A friend of mine has a son 2 months older than my oldest daughter, and she had a C-Section under general anesthesia, and experienced hair loss starting about when baby was 3 months old. I don't think the pain meds or type of delivery have anything to do with the hair loss..... though I don't actually know for sure.

Hello Suzie! Your post is encouraging, because I'm experiencing the same as you whenever I comb or brush my hair.

This makes my second time experiencing hair loss (starting 2-months after the delivery of my babies). I'm experiencing major hair loss around my frontal hairline. This is my second time having this happen to me. My 2nd-born baby is now 18-weeks old and when he was about 2-months-old (the same age as my 1st born when it initially happened) the edges of my hairline suddenly broke off. It's so frustrating & very scary. Fortunately, my hair has length enough to cover this hair loss. But as fast as it falls out, it ultimately returns & suddenly. At least this is how it happened with my 1st born. As with my 2nd born, the hair loss is/has suddenly fallen out & I'm hoping my hair returns as fast/sudden as it did with my eldest son. With my 1st born, he was 6-months-old when my hair suddenly returned. I was so happy & now I'm going through it again with my hair. With both pregnancies, I was given an epidural & resulted in having c-section deliveries. By any chance did you or any other mothers have an epidural and/or c-section delivery? It seems that each time I comb my hair it's shedding. Thanks for sharing your issue as it helps knowing I'm not alone in experiencing this problem for a 2nd time. And just think, hubby wants baby #3 (smh).

I totally thought I would be bald because mine was coming out in clumps until my baby was about...8 months old I think. I thought it would never stop. But it did! (Thank god, my husband was just as concerned with the carpet of hair all over the house.)

Yep, you can blame hormones for this too. With both my daughters I noticed lots of hair shedding when I would brush or wash or even just run my fingers through my hair. Both times it started right at 3 months and continued until baby was about 6 mo this old. I never noticed any bald patches or thinning anywhere, but was expecting to based on how much seemed to be just falling out.

Yeah, a lot of my hair fell out after the birth of my son. It was horrible. I even started to have a receding hairline.

But around 6 months or so, it started growing back. It's funny having tuffs of hair at the temples, but it's nice that it's growing out.

Don't worry, your hair will grow back. :)
