Has anyone's child had cradle cap?

My 4 month old son has it pretty bad and now his hair is thinning out and in some areas completely coming out. He has had it since he was about a month old but it seems to have gotten worse. I was washing and brushing his hair regularly to remove the dandruff but now because of it his hair is almost gone where the cradle cap is most severe.

So I stopped washng his hair so much and have been saturating his hair with olive oil (I use it on my hair an dit works wonders) and covering it with a little kids "doorag" I found in the beauty supply store! It seems to help with the dryness but not get rid of it.

ANY ADVICE??????

My son had cradle cap.  I think he may still have a bit, but his hair is getting too thick to tell.  The ped said there was no need to do anything unless it was really annoying me.  I did try a bit of baby oil a couple of times and got rid of some of it, but I hated dealing w/ all the greasiness and just decided to leave it alone.

My daughter had cradle cap through her scalp, behind and in front of her ears, along her brow and even her eye lids and the only thing that worked was simple Vaseline (Petroleum Jelly). I rubbed it on and after a half hour it just wiped away. I continued putting it on for a couple of days to make sure it was gone and the redness disappeared but it was literally the best solution as it never came back. Once you get rid of it you just need to ensure that you moisturise your baby every day to prevent its return and ensure a balance of oils in the skin. A good shampoo is the Mustela Foaming Shampoo which is a bit expensive but it lasts a very long time. Lastly, just ensure that your products do not contain perfume as this can aggravate your baby's sensitive skin. Johnson and Johnson products are highly perfumed and tend to irritate and dry out baby's skin so just be careful which products you are using.

I know it was just posted to use baby oil.. but I want to say again use baby oil!! My son had it bad and I gently rub his scalp with baby oil and let it sit on there for 5-10 minutes then ran through his hair with a fine tooth comb and it all came off. Of course wash her hair after that. I did this twice in one week and he never got it again!

Both my kids had cradle cap and this is what I did to cure it.  I rubbed oil (baby or olive) on the scalp and left it alone for at least half an hour.  Then I carefully combed through the hair and gently rubbed the scales off the scalp with a baby comb until it all came off.  Then I would give them a bath and wash their hair.  I would do this every 3/4 days until the cradle cap was gone.  With my son I used a cream after called Moisturel if I noticed dry skin not cradle cap only!!  What I did to get rid of the cradle cap worked faster with my daughter than my son but it works! and if it helps to know my mom used to do this to my sister and I when we were babies.

I used mineral oil (its thicker then olive oil) for my son's cradle cap left it in for 3 day with no covering and brush it twice a day then washed his hair. It took two times but then it was gone and he has only had it once since then and it has been a year.

It will take time for it to completely go away, it's just one of those things some kids get. I am SO about hygiene and my son got it too. So my Pedi suggested less washing too as it can really dry them out, lots of brushing/combing and using either olive oil, baby oil or jojoba oil. Put a hat on it and let it sit for a little bit, not too long though, but then wash it out. You must take care though to ensure none of the oil is ingested and it can go into their lungs and cause suffocation.

I gently but firmly massaged olive oil into my daughters head then scrubbed it with her baby brush and it seemed to work! we also only bath her every 2nd or 3rd day unless she needs it more often....when i scrubbed her head i was fairly rough but she seemed to like it and she has never had a problem since....good luck!

I used the Gentle Naturals Baby Cradle Cap Treatment when my daughter got what I like to call Cradle Crap, ha! It worked wonders!! I highly recommend it and it's really gentle!

My pediatrician told me to use Neutrogena T-gel shampoo.  doesn't smell the greatest on a baby, but it cleared it up pretty quickly.

I actually picked up some cradle cap "lotion" that seemed to work well along with the combing.  It seemed to get a little worse before it finally got better but it's been about two months since it last showed up on my 11 week old boy.

Ok thanks...so it seems I am on the right path...as for my hair....I usually wash and condition and then put a small amount of olive oil on. I usually reapply every few days in between washes. My hair has never been so healthy and grown so fast!

Olive oil is also great on your skin!! While your in the shower before you dry off rub some on then air dry a bit..your skin will totally be hydrated and you wont even need lotion. Great for the winter months.

Right after I wash my daughter's hair I rub baby oil in it and don't wash it again for 3-4 days. I started doing this a few weeks ago and it automatically worked!

As for you putting the olive oil on your hair, how do you do it? After you wash it? My hair and scalp have been so horribly dry since giving birth 7 months ago and this morning I was tempted to even put baby oil in my hair! lol

my 4 month old daughter has a little bit of it too. rub baby oil on his scalp. later, gently use a baby comb through his hair, this will help loosen the scales
