Have any home remedies for thrush?
We had thrush, and the doctor gave us Nystatin. It worked great, so that might be an option if the home remedies don't work. It can also be taken with the home remedies. Acidophilus and Gentian Violet are probably your best bet. Get the acidophilus that comes in capsules that you can open and are filled with powder if your baby is younger than 6 months. If your baby is 6 months or older, get the liquid flavored acidophilus that is refrigerated. My grocery store keeps it next to the health food section where they sell the organic vegetatian TV dinners.

Yeah, just call ahead for the Gentian Violet. Around here all the pharmacies have it, but I hear in other places they don't. I used it with Jack Newman's Nipple Cream (prescribed by my midwife) and took acidophilus. It cleared up very fast and so far has not come back! Be prepared though... it is very purple! None of my relatives had ever heard of it and were shocked and almost concerned about the appearance of it. I also liked that it seemed to take the pain away. I don't think it was my imagination... it really felt better right after I treated it.

Yogurt always works for me... I always eat it when I'm going to be taking antibiotics since they kill all the good and bad bacteria. The Yogurt puts the good bacteria back into your system so you don't get thrush or yeast infections. I don't have advice for the baby as I'm not there, yet, but my understanding is if your breastfeeding it will help the baby, too!

I've found gentian violet in pharmacies before but the pharmacy stocked a lot of natural remedies and herbs. I'd call ahead to see if they have it or check out local health stores. The only place I've seen grapefruit seed extract in health food stores. But acidophilus is getting to be pretty common so you can find it just about anywhere--they even carry it at my local Sam's Club

did you get the nystatin from your dr? me and my son had thrush pretty bad and i used the topical treatment (nystatin) for me and my son, but i also got prescribed a pill that i cant recall the name of, but it cleared up the thrush for me and him with in a week... we just had to be very careful about getting it again for a couple weeks (always wash and sanitize our hands after diapers or feeding and wash babies hands after diaper changing because he liked to touch his little guy when we were changing his diaper..) other than that it will go away on its own after a month or so is what my lactation consultant told me (but who wants to wait that long in pain!) i would talk to your dr about the pill that they can give you to take that will clear it up!
try over the counter gention violet. You can buy it at health food stores. 0.5-1 % apply to babies mouth and your nipples 1 time a day for 3 days. It will stain clothing so be sure to wear your nursing pads and put bib on baby and use burp cloths! Works better than Dr. prescribed meds!
