I was wonderfing how many nursing mothers have a normal period each month? Is yes, do you notice a dip in supply right before your period starts? When does it return to normal? I have regular periods each month and I do notice a pretty big dip in my supply about 5 days before my period all the way up until the first day of bleeding! I have heard this is very common! My daughter is 5 1/2 months old and is also supplimented with formula a couple times a day and is also starting solids, how ever she is still nursing a good 5-8 times a day and i do pump some too!!!

I did notice that in the early months for my son - he seemed fussier when I got my period, and i believe that my milk quality was not as good, but now that he is on solids - I do not notice a difference - for him.

My son is 11 months now but my periods started back up when he was 2 months old. I exclusively breastfeed him til 6 months and he's still a very active nurser to this day. I have notice about 2 days before my period that my milk supply will drop because my son is fussier at the breast and nurses alot more, kinda like there empty! A couple days before my period stops my milk supply is back to normal. I did have one month were I had two periods back to back and then my next period was late but my Ob-Gyn said it was my hormones still adjusting. I'd say it's all pretty normal, probably just a hormonal thing!

Thanks Ladies -

I have had bleeding problems since our daughter was born! Even when she was exclusivly nursing I would bleed non stop! I had PP bleeding for 13 weeks!!! Then after that stopped my periods returned!!! I plan on nursing her for a year even with soild and some formula!!! I think some of mommys milk is better than none!!!

Yes, my baby is 5 months old now but I started a regular period when he was 3 months. And yes, during my periods the milk production is less, and it lasts throughout my period, then the supply is back up after it's over. I think it is due to hormones fluctuating in your body during this time. Keep up the breastfeeding, though!

I have three kids, am currently pregnant with #4 and I've only had 7 periods since my first was born. I noticed that my breasts would get insanely sore right around ovulation time, then feel bruised for the next two weeks, then they would be totally fine as soon as I started my period. I didn't really notice a drop in supply, but my kids just nursed on demand and I wasn't really paying attention to how often or how long.

Strangely, my nipples and breasts feel totally fine while I'm pregnant. I successfully nursed #2 through my third pregnancy, and plan to continue to nurse #3 through this pregnancy. I do lose practically all milk around 4-5 months, but my little ones eat enough solids to compensate, and they just nurse for comfort.

my daughter didn't like the taste of my milk while on my period....she would nurse less. hot liquids help boost milk supply, coffee-just watch caffiene, tea, hot cocoa, there are even some great nursing teas. if helps if you drink ALOT, spread out during the day.... the stuff we do for our kids, huh?
