hope this isn't TMI

Ok. I am in a lot of pain. My nipples hurt SO bad between feedings ( kind of sting and just plain hurt) and especially during feedings. My little guy is 9 months old and breastfeds on demand day and night. We have never had a problem with improper latch or pain like this before. He recently just had a few teeth break through and we went through the biting and restless tugging for a few weeks. ( I would pull him off and tell him NO and he slowly stopped doing it-probably helped that the teeth came out too) That hurt but a sharp pain and only for a moment when he did it, then a little sore if he left a bruise. I certainly didn't like it but it was bearable. What's going on now is really bothering me.
I had really bad mastitis with my first child and that felt (to me) more like deep pain and engorgment pain, soreness under my underarms, whole boobie plus I had a fever. (much worse than this) what I'm having now is just nipple pain and they look red and irritated but no blisters or anything. TMI, I know, sorry. could it be Thrush? I don't see any white patches on me or my baby's mouth. his bum is a little red but not yeast infection looking. Also I had some pain on one side like ovulation about 2 weeks ago and been having horrible cramps the past few days. No period yet but I'm expecting it any day now. (will be my first after having my son) Is all this pain just from that? I don't ever get sore breasts with menstruation, but then again I have never had my period while breastfeeding.

we are seeing the pediatrician tomorrow but sometimes I feel like their guess is no better than mine. :( oh, and my hubby got a vasectomy so there is NO way I am preggers again! Anybody have a clue to what is going on?

Try lanolin like the other moms suggested. Also take some of your breast milk and rub it on your nipples and let air dry. You would be amazed at what your own breast milk can cure.

I'm with Sara D on the cream. Sounds dangerous... Anyway, if your doctor is encouraging you to wean, you may want to find a more bf friendly doctor. Ask around town, and I'm sure you will get recommendations. If it is an infection, there are different natural remedies you can try if you want to go that route.

if the dr has estblished that its not a yeast or thrush infection i would go to walmart and get Lansinoh Lanolin (its in a purple box) its a cream for breast feeding moms and it works wonders it numbs the nipple area so you can nurse more relaxed and it heals and has an infection fighter all in one it about ten dollars its also safe to put on right before nursing and after both doesnt hurt baby at all

That's strange. I would be careful with the cream. Everything I've read said that lanolin is the only thing you don't have to clean off before nursing. Can you see damage on your nipple? If so you could express milk out, rub it in and let it air dry. Do you have access to a lactation consultant at your hospital or something? Maybe you need a second opinion. Really focus on making sure baby has a good latch. If he's teething his latch may be off a little causing you pain.

So Dr. says we do not have thrush. Logan is fine, just teething some more. And those 3 really big sharp teeth he already has have just been roughing me up and now I have an infection according to the doctor. He gave me some cream that he said would be harmless if Logan got any in his mouth but right on the box in bold letters are "FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY- DO NOT INGEST" .And the stupid cream was $50 AFTER insurance...awesome. Then he gave me one last bit of advice. " If this doesn't work you might want to consider weaning" ....I feel like I could burst out into tears at any moment now. I am so miserable right now. I'm sad that it might be coming to an end and my boobies really hurt.

Does your baby have thrush? It can be transfered to mom's nipples as I know from painfull experience! You can treat it with over the counter yeast infection cream, as it is a fungal thing. Good luck!

it is probably thrush and you dont have to have an infection (down there) its actually a compleatly different form of yeast i got it at about 8 months with my son because he was just starting on solids and i didnt realize you need to clean babys mouth before after meal nursing i have since learned to wipe both the outside on his face and the inside on his gums it cleared up in about a week naturaly with just using olay soap to clean the ta tas hope this helps

ok, I was thinking that's what It sounded like too, but I've never had any yeast infection of any kind and this is the first child I have breastfed (only pumped for the first 2 months for my first before getting horrible mastitis) honestly, before I googled it, I thought it was just something some newborns get if mommy has one downstairs. didn't realize older babies got it or you could get it on your ta-ta's as well! makes since though.

I had thrush a couple of months ago, and the symptoms you're describing are pretty much identical to what I experienced! My son never had any white patches or any indication that the thrush had spread to him. I was treated with Gentian Violet, which is a purple liquid that they "paint" onto your nipples. It kills the yeast. They also painted it on the inside of my son's mouth, even though he had no symptoms, just as a precaution. It only took one treatment and I felt better within a day!

It really sounds like a yeast issue to me. You can have thrush without your baby ever having white in the mouth. I did. It's easy to treat for thrush. I prefer to treat naturally with probiotics and such, but the important thing is to treat it so you can both feel better. If it's thrush, you will feel relief pretty quickly. Hope this helps...
