How do I get my son to stay on the breast?

My son is six weeks old and I have just recently started breastfeeding in public using a Hooter hider. It is very difficult to stay discreet, however, because he is constantly coming off while still desiring to nurse so I have to to relatch several times during each feeding. Is this common? Is there something I can do to help him stay on?

I bought a great nursing cover online - It is like a huge apron. I keep it on while my boobs hang out underneath and no one can see a thing. http://babytimenursingcover.com/

Truthfully, I've stopped covering up - it's too awkward and I think people need to get used to seeing babies nurse in public! I did buy an inflatable nursing pillow for when we're on the go which has been really helpful getting a good position.

The blanket does get in the way and what a pain. I got tank tops at Target. The top unlatches. You can lift up your shirt without your belly being exposed and then hide your booby with your shirt. But ya my little man is 6mo and still pulls off. So my nipple gets exposed sometimes so I have to be quick to cover it.

i'd bet that it's less about him being uncomfortable, and more about YOU being uncomfortable. my darling has trouble eating if i'm not comfortable, contorting my body to feed him or something, i guess he can sense it.

I stopped using a blanket because it seemed to get in the way more than actually cover us up. I find that if I can locate an area to nurse that has some privacy (like a booth in a restaurant or a bench that's next to a corner) that I can turn my body to the side and have him latch without showing anything. Then once he's on, i turn back forward and use my shirt to cover up. If he unlatches, I just turn again. Hope this helps!

yes it is. I breastfeed all three of my daughters about a year. First thing is what you are wearing . go to motherwear.com they really do have bras and clothes that make it easier to breastfeed in public. Second someone kiddos need quiet to eat , my girlfriend for example has to take her third child somewhere else to eat or she is too distracted. Third this too shall pass. If breastfeeding is really something you want to do then hang in there. Even when he gets older and you think he is weaning he is probably just going thru a phase. My girls all did and then after a few weeks of not eating right that went back to normal. It may just be that you need a really big blanket, loose shirts, and you might just have to nurse for a little while longer in private. I hope this helps.:)

Maybe he's just uncomfortable, or in a different position that he's not used to?

I gave up on the blanket/hooter hider. It just didn't work for us because it would get too hot/stuffy under there and she'd get mad and try to bat it off.

Thanks! I think a lot of time when we are in public he probably is uncomfortable due to the location as well as me trying to keep everything covered.

Make sure you are in a comfortable position for you and him when you start. Try keeping his head secure with your hand. Unfortunately, he might still come off. My baby has feeds sometimes when he is constantly coming off too.
