How do I properly introduce cereal and not lose my milk supply?

My son 4 months and I want to start him on cereal around five months and still breastfeed until he is a year if not longer. How do I go about giving him food and still keep my milk supply strong?

Pump and use your milk to mix with the cereal. Just make sure you pump when you replace cereal or solid foods for your milk.

I would recommend waiting until at least 6 months to start solids, no solids are necessary until one year. Always nurse first until one year - start with one meal per day for a couple weeks. Then work up to 2 meals per day. Make sure to introduce only one food at a time so you can watch for allergies. Check out babycenter for more info on what and how much. Just remember that to continue nursing, always nurse first - solids are extra if they are still hungry.

the world health organisation recommends you dont start solids until 6mo at the earliest. i started my son when he was 6 mo and never offered cereal. we started with carrot, apple, pumpkin, pear, potato, banana......and i never pureed it. he has always prefered soft chunks(small enough not to choke). i offered pureed food once and he refused to eat it.

my son is now 8mo and eats everything i give him as well as having close to 10 breastfeeds a day. your supply will keep up with your babies needs.

i rushed solids with my first son, starting him at 4mo...but it has absolutely no nutritional benifit and doesnt help with sleeping longer between feeds. i wouldnt rush it.

all the best

Why do you want to start him on cereal? It offers absolutely no benefits whatsoever over your own milk. Why not wait until he's truly ready for solids, when he can pick up food, put it in his mouth, chew it and swallow it?

Also keep pumping... you probably won't loose your supply if ya dont pump... your body will adjust itself to the new feeding routine as you start to introduce your baby to cereal, juice, then baby foods....by that time you may only feed just a few times a day but mostly at night..

Breastfeed first, then offer a few bites of food. And be careful not to OVERfeed - that´s a danger with spoon-feeding because you can´t tell when your baby is full and they don´t have the ability to stop the food from coming.

So try to breastfeed, then maybe give a teaspoon of rice cereal, but expect a lot of it to roll out.
