My daughter is 2 months and we have both been treated for thrush. My daughter does not have the patches in her mouth anymore but my nipples still are red and irritated. We were first treated with nystatin-didn't get rid of it, fluconazole got rid of hers but not mine. I'm taking acidophilus 1 capsule and day and bought gentian violet. I don't know how often I should take the acidophilus or how often I should put on the gentian violet but I really don't want my daughter to get it again and I really want to get rid of this. Any advise in the area is welcome! Thank you mommies :))

GV never worked for us, and SUPER messy. I got the best results with Grapefruit Seed Extract. I mixed 15 drops with 1oz distilled water. I put it on my nips after every nursing session. Also used a qtip and swabbed out my sons mouth after every feeding too. It took about 3 days, but totally gone after that.
All this after trying with nystatin and GV for like 3 months! Darn thrush! good luck!

Hi,
You also have to be treated with antifungal cream. I just did a blog on this today. Please visit my website at http:www.breastfeedingwithlove.com Good luck. It takes time to get rid of a yeast infection however, both of you need to be treated together. Hang in there. It will get better. Betty H. Greenman BS,CLC,IBCLC

Nystatin gave me the WORST irritation/rash around my nipple. I thought I still had a yeast infection there and cooped on more...finally a different doctor said it was skin irritation. I stopped Nystatin cream on me, applied coconut oil only, and we were all cleared up. We had thrush/yeast it felt like forever. If you don't have the pain inside your breast, maybe you also have a reaction to the topical Nystatin. All that being said, gentian violet combined with oral meds cleared us up for good. Baby will have a crazy blue/purple mouth, and use it sparingly. But I say if baby doesn't have a patch in mouth and if you don't have that awful duct pain, try eliminating the Nystatin. Good luck!

Both my twin girls had thrush and we used a combo of gentian violet, grapefruit seed extract, Dr Sears nipple cream and probiotics...paint your nipples with gv, I also put it on a q tip and let the girls suck it for a sec. Grapefruit seed extract-15 drops in a glass of water twice a day (tastes like crap but it works), and Bio K drink once or twice a day. The nipple cream is great but you need a scrip...go on line to Dr Sears to get the formulation, then ask your doc. Also eliminating or reducing sugar, bread, beer, wine, etc from your diet will help. Good luck!

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

What type of grapefruit seed extract did you use? I want to try this bc the cracks and bleeding have not stopped and it has been 4 days on antibiotics and Nystatin

I used gentian violet to treat our thrush when I was breastfeeding my daughter. I painted it on my nipples twice a day for 3 days. I have read not to use the gv more than 3 days. When she nursed, it coated her mouth. It worked for us. You can also paint the inside of the baby's mouth, but the problem for us was more with my thrush than hers. Just be careful - it does stain EVERYTHING! I would also take the acidophilus 2 or 3 times a day until a couple weeks after the thrush is gone. You can also get infant probiotics at the health food store - it comes in a powder you can mix into a bottle. Although if you aren't giving your daughter a bottle that won't help much. My daughter was already eating solid foods when we had the thrush problem, so I started putting probiotics in her cereal daily. It also helps with their immune system!
