How long after breastfeeding did you get a period?

I finished nursing my daughter at a year and now it is coming to two months and I still have yet to have a period...Is this common? I have had cramps like before I got pregnant but haven't even spotted. I've taken a pregnancy test and I'm not pregnant...I also have been using my clear blue ovulation monitor and I haven't ovulated either. Just wondering how long on average it took to get your period again? I'm hoping to start trying this summer/ fall....

It sounds very normal at this point, every woman is different, within 4 weeks of having my son I had a regular period and he was and is still breastfeeding on demand at 15 months and I'm 6.5 months pregnant..

Hi, I breastfed my baby exclusively for 6 wks and then i only breastfed by night until he was 4 months. I stopped breastfeeding on the 27th of Feb and my period returned on the 29th of March. Best of luck with conceiving :0)

Hi, with my first son, I pumped for 7 months and didn't get my period until my 7th month, when my supply started to go down. With my second son, I am nursing exclusively and my period came back when he was 4 months old. Good luck!

I was unfortunate enough that 4 weeks after the post pregnancy bleed finished i was back to my ridiculously regular periods grr. even though my son was drinking enough that i had to drink 7 litres a day or feel completely dehydrated. guess it depends a lot on how regualr you where before getting pregnant.

With my first I got my period even when I was nursing at 3 months after his birth, boy was I bummed. However, with my second I haven't had it yet and he is 7.5 months old now, so go figure. All our hormone levels are a little bit different. I recall hearing once that our hormaone levels don't go back to their pre-pregnancy levels until nearly two years after birth so maybe take that into account in figuring things out. Hope this helps.

I've been extremely, annoyingly regular since my son (now 13 months) was 2.5 months old. He was nursing ALL the time too.

It's been 4 months and I'm period free, hun! I've heard lasting up to a year. But I've also heard it's still possible (although perhaps more difficult) to get pregnant during this time. That's why doctors do not advise not using birth control even if you are exclusively bfing.

I got mine when my daughter was 3 or 4 mo exclusively breastfeeding. Had a period every 2 weeks tho. Clearly not ovulating. The breastfeeding definitely affects all people differently. You may want to consult w your ob. she can test your prolactin level, thyroid, fsh/LH etc to see if there is something hormonal going on (possibly unrelated to your nursing. I would do this asap to get into tip top shape before you start trying again. gives you plenty of time to figure it.

If you are using the clearblue monitor, you'll find the charting and message boards at http://nfp.marquette.edu/index.php
It's an online system specifically designed around the clearblue monitor, and they have doctors and nurses who specialize in fertility on the message boards to look at your charting and answer your questions! It's currently free since the website is in beta testing.
Especially if you are wanting to conceive soon, it will be extremely helpful! They are experts and are at your disposal for free :)

My doctor told me to call her if it took more than six months to come back after I was finished BFing. Not that anything was necessarily wrong at that point, just that she'd check things out if I was wanting to start trying again. It's not uncommon to have some delay post weaning.

It varies from person to person but it is totally normal to not get you period for months. I have already had one and am still breastfeeding. My daughter is only 2 months old.

Your body will decide when it is ready.
