My baby is almost 14 mo and I plan to breastfeed him as long as he wants. Although, I would be sad if he wanted to stop right now.

My first announced he was a big boy and didn't need nursies anymore when he was 27 months. My current nursling is 3 months old and I plan on letting him tell me when he's done :)

You just keep on going and don't listen to anyone but yourself. You know what is best for you and your baby and you should listen to that voice.
Breastfeeding is so good for them, emotionally as well as nutritionally, until they want to give it up... and of course you too:)

My fourth child is 18 months and I am still nursing her and my 3 year old. The baby is due in January so obviously I am not opposed to tandem nursing. Though the other two children weaned by 11 months on their own.

(although it is not easy) (but not breastfeeding does not make it easier)!!! : - )

i recommend you warmly or that it will be the best for your child... continue as long as you can support her... : - ))

18 months and we are both still happy about it. He only nurses 3x/day now, so I strongly suspect that he will be done in the next 6 mos- 1 year.

I am nursing my daughter who is currently 11months. I enjoy every second of it and I also would like to continue for a bit longer. It upsets me when people close to me tell me that she shouldn't be nursing anymore. No one in my family nursed at all, so they don't know what they are missing. I will nurse Claire until our second child comes along (I just discovered w are pregnant again), unless she weans herself prior to that.

Kate,

If you wanted to you can continue to nurse both your toddler and newborn when the time comes. It is hard work and you have to take good care of yourself, but if you wanted you can My fourth child is 18 months and I am still nursing her and my 3 year old. I really think its so fantastic that there are so many mums out there who are determined to continue to breastfeed their children until the child wants to wean themselves! I have a 6 month old son who just cut his first tooth yesterday, and I was so surprised at the friends who instantly asked me whether I was going to quit feeding! I plan to continue feeding until Jackson wants to wean himself because the benefits are just amazing!

Tighe is 14 months and has started to self wean. I am a bit upset as I had planned to let him "child led wean", but wasn't expecting it to be so soon. :(. Not to worry he is happy and healthy and thats all that matters. Now we can get to TTC #2!!

With my first child, I weaned her at 15 mo. Then with my second child, he weaned himself at 13 months. Then my twin boys weaned themselves at about 18 months. In my experience, it was easier on me to let them wean themselves because I knew they were done and I felt better about it. I was selfish with my first child. I weaned her because my husband and I were going to go on vacation w/out her.

If any of my children were to have nursed past 18 months, I don't know if I would still feel the same way.

I did up to 2 years - not really my choice. He used me as a pacifier at night for a few minutes b4 falling asleep. The same will probably happen w/ my newet little girl. I had to quit my first kid cold turkey b/c I was so sick w/ hyperemisis during my second pregnancy I couldn't stand for anyone to be near me for 2 full months. I think most women quit early b/c they have to return to the workforce & pumping is a real pain in the butt.

do you offer water or any fluids with a sippy cup? I slowly got my boy used to cows milk that way. Only once he started to like cows milk did I start to cut back on breastfeeding. At night I put a sippy cup of water in his crib in case he wakes and is thirsty. It works great.

I am still nursing, and my boy is 15 months old. We only nurse twice a day, so have cut back, but he really doesn't seem interested in stopping. I will probably continue nursing him until he looses interest or nears his 2nd birthday - whichever comes first. The think about older babies nursing I never liked was when they would grab their moms in public, pull up shirts, etc...so as long as that doesn't happen, I'll continue!

I am still nursing my son and he is 13 months old with 8 teeth! He is very committed to the breast and I hope he will start naturally weanning since I've heard many do. I am starting to offer whole milk...but so far, he hasn't really liked it enough to drink more than a couple sips here & there.

If you really want to start on the cup (no bottles after 12 months!), try warm milk you've just pumped.  To force weaning altogether, try mixing a bit of whole milk in and adding more and more cow's milk over time.  Otherwise, let nature take it's course, ralax, and go with it, knowing that you'll be missing it soon enough!

My daughter self weaned herself off breastfeeding,a nd bottles at 8 months of age... with my son, I was ready to gp as long as he wanted. Well, we hit it! He will be a year in about 3 weeks, and has completely refused to breastfeed for 3 days now... it's killing me, I miss our night time bond, but at the same time, I am actually getting sleep again so that is nice too... I will try again tonight at bedtime to see what happens... but I truly think we are done...boohoo....

Since you are a mom of three may I ask you how your children weaned themselves? How do they do it, how can you tell? My problem is that my child never wanted to drink from a bottle (which I am OK with because I am against bottle feeding) but not only that, he also dislikes formula or cow milk so I am wondering how we shall stop nursing one day and what we shall do, especially at night when he wakes up for a little soothing snack.

I am nursing my 15 months old son and to be honest I have no idea how and when the weaning process will start. I wish it would be easy but somehow doubt it very much. For now we both enjoy it but I must admit I have some fears about how this whole thing will go one day. The only thing to sooth him when he wakes up at night is breastfeeding. He even bit me a few times but that has not discouraged me :-)

FYI i nursed my girls til they were 3 yrs old. After the first year its just a bedtime routine and mornings. U really need a supportive family. You should seek out the LaLeche league in your area. Its the best.

My almost 13 month old breastfed until 11-12 months. I am still breastfeeding at night time, but my milk productions lowered, so I couldn't continue giving her. I also went back to work when she was 6 months, so i wasn't pumping that much milk at 11 months. She likes whole milk and eats a lot of food though. Do the moms who breastfeed throughout the day not give regular food to their kids (just curiosity)

I am still breastfeeding my little girl who will be 3 in November. I get a lot of flack from gossipy relatives who think its not good at all, that i should stop etc. etc. and I feel like I have to go and hide to breastfeed in public with an older child! It's too bad this society is so scared of breastfeeding a child past 6 mths. of age... I think its a perfectly natural thing, and we both enjoy the closeness of our bond together as well as the nutritional aspects which she is still getting :) oy at last i get to talk about it to people who may understand where i am coming from!

Twenty-one months and still nursing, but far more discreetly as I don't want to hear the snarky comments. It seems that everyone I know who nurses long-term does it very privately because of this. Maybe we're ALL doing it to two years or longer, and the whole nation of moms is just keeping it to themselves!

My son is 20 months old and still nurses once a day most days. EVERYBODY that I know thinks that this is a little much, but I feel it's best to let him self-wean, within limits of course, over two is a little much. But right now he sometimes goes two or three days without nursing, so I'm sure it won't be much longer for him.

At the moment I am still nursing my son who will be a year tomorrow, but I have noticed that he isn't too interested in the morning and I work FT away from the home. I try to get in one pumping while he is away and he nurses strong when I get home and all night. I wanted to make it to a year which I have but I haven't given much thought after that...I guess I'll let him wean himself when he is ready.

I am currently breastfeeding my third child and she's now just shy of being 1.5 yrs. old. I too am trying to allow her the time to self-wean, so when she's ready that will be that. I nursed my two other children until they were 18 & 19 mos respectively, who also self-weaned themselves. The only issue I currently have is that unlike my two older children, my girl WILL NOT take a bottle AT ALL. I have tried, every type of bottle, every different nipple, but nothing seems to work for her...she just throws them or turns away completely from them. It's a little tricky when we're coming now to the time where she'll be finished with me and then what?? I'm concerned that she won't sleep well through the night without that last feeding to coast her through the night...so I guess the only alternative is that I'll try to serve her from a cup before bed and see what happens. If anyone has any ideas to help, I'd love to hear them :) Thanks

Hi i breastfed my first child till she was 2 years old and she basically gave up herself. It just sort of dwindled out! It was a pleasant way to end as there were no tears and no sense of loss for her. I am now breastfeeding my son who is 2 years and doesn't seem ready yet to give it up. I am happy to go on for a while yet - it's much better for them not to have to be 'weaned' but every person is different - you have to do what you feel is right for you and your child.

I was anxious to stop with my big girl and had a little trouble with dating so i stopped and regretted it.

with my baby I do refuse sometimes but I make sure we make up for it at night.

I'm all for the nighttime closeness!!

I am still breastfeeding my daughter at 15 months. She still nurses quite a bit, mostly before sleeping, first thing in the morning and if she is feeling bad. I plan to let her wean herself but hoping it will happen before age 2! I have definitely had to teach her some "nursing manners" as she started yanking on my shirt collars when I would ask her to wait for nursing. Overall it has been a very positive experience for both of us. It is also a handy parenting tool. Nothing soothes a baby after a fall quicker than a few minutes of nursing.

My 13 month old son is a very adament nurser. I am ok to stop but he refuses! I am able to nurse in the morning, once after he comes home from daycare, and then before bed. I was certain we would be done by now. I can't imagine that I even have much milk left as I am not pumping while at work anymore. He shows no signs of stopping and I figure he will stop when he is ready. It is hard though because he is allergic to eggs and nuts so I have to be careful of what I eat too!! BTW, he has 16 teeth and has finally stopped biting me!!!
