How often does your 6 month old nurse? We have started solids.

Hi! My son is 6 and a half months old and I started him on solids. My question is how often is a 6 month old supposed to nurse? Now that he is on solids I don't find he nurses as frequently as he use to. He has a tbs in the morning and in the evening. It's not much. I don't know if I'm just worried for nothing. He does wet his diapers enough. Could it be that he is older so he doesn't need to nurse as much.?

My guy is almost 8 months and his schedule is a bit different with bottles at daycare, but with me he eats like this: (I feed on demand, but this is close)

7am - BM

9:30am - BM (then solids)

12pm - BM

2:30pm - BM (then solids)

5pm - BM

6pm - solids

7pm - BM to sleep

I think every baby is different, but I have read that at this time solids are not nearly as important as nursing and are more for the practice of eating once the one year mark comes rather than for nutritional value. I always nurse before offering solids. I really like this website for my questions that have come up about starting solids. Check it out www.kellymom.com Good Luck!

when I told my lactation consultant that I'd introduced solids, she said that he'd likely nurse between 4 & 6x in 24hrs. Not my kid ;) he still nurses 8-10x day just like always. I'd secretly hoped that solids would decrease # of sessions. Oh well. I love BFing so I'll go w/ whatever he wants. Plus, my son is a "snacker"... he nurses for short periods (8-10min each session) so I think he gets hungrier faster. just a thought. if he'd nurse longer and get more, he'd be satisfied longer thus needing to nurse less.

If you see this, leave this form field blank.

When I first started Mckinzie on solids, she would pretty much nurse just the same, but when I increased the amount of solids, she nursed less often. She is 5.5 months, has 3 solid meals a day (3 tbsp rice cereal and 1 tub Gerber's 1st or 2nd foods) and usually 5 breast milk feedings. I read that as they get older also, they suck harder and not as long, so they're still getting the same (or right) amount.

He has about 4 really good nursing sessions a day and he still nurses at night at least 2 times.
