As my baby gets older, it seems like he is wanting to nurse less often (which I expected would happen.) However, what is the minimum number of feedings I should be aiming for each day? He typically nurses 7 times/day, but some days he seems happy to only nurse 6 times. And today, I am struggling to get him to nurse past 5 times.

As long as he is thriving and has plenty of pees and poops, don't worry. My daughter doubled her birth weight in 2 months only nursing about 5 times a day. She would wait until I was about to pop, then suck them flat in 5 minutes per breast. You could hear her gulping from across the room. Then I had my son, and he would nurse all day long, 12 times or so, 45 minutes at a time, and would doze off and when he went for his 6 week check up, he hardly gained at all. I actually cut his feedings to about 7, but made him stay awake and shortened the amount of time on the breast, and he learned to eat right, rather than just snuggle the booby, and he started gaining right away. I nursed him 26 months, weaned 11 months ago and he is wearing size 4 s and 5s. (he just turned 3 last month)

On demand with a minimum of 7-10 wet diapers a day. Watch the amount of wet diapers closely that is the real indication of how much your baby is getting. Also keep in mind that infants gradually get better and better at nursing and nurse less for shorter periods of time.

A 7 week old should be nursing a lot. When my son was that age, I let him nurse whenever he wanted to which was a lot. If he is not wanting to nurse very often, I would ask his pediatrician about it, but every 2-3 hours you should try to make him nurse. Even if he doesn't eat for very long, at least he's getting something.

7 weeks or months? A 7 week old should be eating every hour or two at least! I am confused.

At 7 weeks the baby should still be nursing like about every 2-3 hours with the exception of a longer stretch at night. I still wouldnt let him go more than 4-6 hours without a feeding. Is he too sleepy to eat or why does is seem like he is eating less. You can always take him into the doctors office just for a weight check if you're worried about how often your 7 week old should be nursing. As long as he keeps gaining then he is fine! Best of luck!
