From what I understand for a tea to actually work you'd have to be drinking it literally all day. When you use a tea you don't really get much from it because all the herbs are still in the teabag. I would imagine supplements work well. Although, I haven't had any luck with fenugreek and blessed thistle.

I used fenugreek. There's also a tea called Mother's milk that my sister in law used.

Yes you can actually get a prescription from your Dr. it's called Reglan. Reglan is an anti nausea medication and a side effect of it is it increases milk supply and let me tell you, IT WORKS! Also if this isn't something you want to do, try pumping every 1 1/2 - 2 hours to get your milk supply demand up. I have taken the Reglan and it's fine to take during breast feeding and I had no side effects, it can make you sleepy though but I was already tired having a new lil' one around. Anyway good luck!

Try Oatmeal that sometimes will help. You can have it in cookies or just plain cooked bowl of oatmeal

Quoting Vicki:
Stay hydrated and eat well. Feed on demand. It has worked for thousands of years.
I 100% agree, and whatever you do visit www.kellymom.com for lots of good BF resources.
I have used fenugreek and also an all natural tea called Mother's Milk that i picked up at the local health food store. I would personally stay away from prescribed drugs, go all natural, it's best for you and baby
good luck

I was having issues w/ not producing enough milk. My doc suggested a drug called Reglan (I believe this is how it's spelled). Good Luck

i agree with the Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle, although if you are just looking for a short term fix, like you need to pump a bunch because you are going away for the weekend with the little one, have a beer, Guinness to be exact lol

Best way to increase supply is frequent nursing, ie, nurse whenever baby wants it. If you're not making enough for baby, baby will nurse very often. Wake baby during the night to nurse as well.
Concerning the suggestion to schedule feedings- the shorter the time between feedings the higher fat content in milk. Scheduling feedings can increase the amount of foremilk and can lead to digestive upsets and failure to thrive. Constant 'snacking' does NOT cause baby to get only foremilk- in fact, the fat content of the milk is higher. The normal course of breastfeeding appears to be short feedings a few times an hour, not long feeding spaced far apart.
Frequent feedings stimulate the breasts to increase milk production.
So for that poster, I am currently nursing my own eight month old, on demand, and she nurses about three times an hour. And it's working beautifully.

I find that NOT feeding on demand works better. Make sure your baby gets a full meal each time s/he nurses and goes 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 hours between feedings. This ensures sufficient time for milk production before the next feeding and that baby gets the full spectrum of nutrients from beginning to end of a feeding. Constant snacking means baby only gets the watery milk from the beginning of a feeding and stays hungry, wanting to nurse even more often, which wears out Mommy and decreases her milk supply. My sister demand fed her first - every hour for 8 MONTHS. She put her second on a flexible routine (NOT schedule) and it worked beautifully. Both mine have been on routines. Of course, drink LOTS of water and DON'T DIET. I started dieting too soon with my first and my milk decreased. I quit and figured I can get back in shape ater weaning and milk went right back up. I have a friend who just couldn't produce enough milk no matter what she did or how much she pumped; those cases are rare, but it does happen. As for supplements, I've never needed any so these ladies are MUCH more knowledgable than me! Hope our combined efforts help, and good luck!

Take Schlehen's Blackthorn Berry Elixir. Quite yummy, but is designed for this. Works well as a drink - Jungle Juice = 50 ml berry elixir, 1 ltr apple juice, 1 sachet rehydrat, 2 liters water and 10 drops rescue remedy per glass - delicious and keeps you well hydrated!

I'm on a prescription called Domperidone. My lactation Consultant also suggested Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle taken together. I also have to make sure I drink a Lot (about 4-5 litres a day) and I find that makes a huge difference.
