my baby latched on like a champ. she just had a very strong sucking reflex, which i am thankful for. lots of babies are born without it due to pre term.  anywho... i had blisters for the first week or so then the lactation lady gave me some soothies. they are little gell pads for your nipples. it healed them up in less than 24 hours. the reason they do that is because the nipples do not have time to heal in between feedings. so everytime they try to heal the baby rips them right off again. make sure your latch is good and big and get some soothies. you can get them on line or ask your lactation specialist about them. you can also put them in the fridge while you are feeding and when you are done, your nipples will thank you for the cold!!!   good luck i hope this is helpful cause i wanted to give up breast feeding when i was going through it. it gets better!!!!!!!!!!

My son is 6 months old... and I had never had any type of blisters or cracking etc... until this week. He has been nursing a lot more this last two weeks since he was sick, and I somehow got 3 tiny blood blisters on my right nipple... OMG... they hurt!! I thankfully still had a tube of medela's lanolin and some of my first years pads with the lanolin in them. I wore those to work and only pumped on that side for a couple days... mainly becasue that didn't hurt as bad as him actually nursing. Today, 4 days later... it already is much better!! Actually let him nurse on that side this am, and so far so good. I will still use the lanolin to be sure it is gone though.

thanks everyone for the advice...he has done fine latchin from day one and never had a problem...he is now five months and this just started to happen a week ago...when he was first born i put lanolin on alot and then haven't needed it...this is a white spot on the tip of my nipple that can feel like a sharp needle pain every once in awhile and there has been a couple times my breast has gotten nobby and hard then that goes away so in the last week while this has happened my breast has been sore and its sore to feed...so i am tryin the warm compresses, lanolin, warm showers, pumpin, and feedin even though it hurts to see if it will go away...the discription you guys gave me it seems like i have a clogged duct...

Clogged milk ducts, by the way, Is a another ball game. VERY PAINFUL!!! Not the same thing as the little blisters. You will have a red spot and it will be very painful.

Yes, girl, you are not alone. It will get easier. I promise. There is Lansinoh gel it worked well for me. The main thing is they just have to toughen. I know that sounds terrible, but it's true. Good luck, we are here for you!

I had a few blisters when I first started Breastfeeding. However, once my nipples got used to it, they went away. I met with a lactation consultant and she thought my latch was fantastic, she said it was just my nipples getting used to it all.

Ouch, no blister...but I've had sore nipples from poor latch on of an overly hungry child! Lanolin is a must and Medela has awesome breast sheilds. When my oldest was having difficulty latching on and my nipple became extremely sore, I just pumped that one breast right after each feeding on the opposite breast. That way I kept my milk production up. Once the nipple healed, I went back to feeding. Plus I had a nice supply of frozen breast milk for when I went back to work or I was out and my DH could feed her. If it doesn't get better, contact a lactation consultant or even your own MD. If it gets too bad you may have an infection.

I got a blister with my son when he first started nursing - for us it as a latch and position issue. Once I got those fixed, I healed right up. But mother of all that is holy did it hurt for a while!! :) Lots and lots of Lansinoh. They also make these little pads that can go in your bra now called Soothies that are really wonderful for tender nipples - they don't help much for the healing but they help with the pain in between nursing. Hang in there and good luck!!

Quoting Andrea:

I had one, it was a clogged milk duct, no biggie but it hurts a bit.  Shortly after the blister appeared a portion of my breast became engorged.  I just massaged the swollen area while in the shower and nursed like crazy, even pumped a little.  It will eventually get better all on its own.  Hope this was helpful, good luck!

Ditto!  Mine was caused by a clogged duct from falling asleep with my son's arm under my breast.  As long as I'm careful to move his arm before I fall asleep it doesn't come back but the few times I've been too tierd and forgot it came right back.  Good luck!

Ouchie! I'm sorry. Definitely use the Medela nipple shields. After I blistered, cracked, and bled, I used these shields for about a month. I recommend them to all new moms. Good luck!

Ouch! I agree use the lansinoh cream, it should heal fairly quickly and correct the latch. Have you consulted w/ a lactation consulant? Also I used the nipple sheild w/ my son and he got nipple confusion w/ it. It was very difficult to get him to nurse w/out it. So try not to keep it on too long.

yes!...I have, the latch isnt correct.I had some nipple shields from medela that the hopspital gave me, if you have one of those you can wear it until the blister goes away, unfortunaly you have to keep nursing over it, just put lasinoh or some type of nipple cream on it b4 and after. If the skin is broken, like mine was once, the lactation consultant told me to use a pin point of bacetracin on it after nursing.....helps heal it...hope this helps
