Hello there Moms! My little girl is 8 1/2 months and I would like to breastfeed at least until she is 1 year old. I pump from time to time to have some milk for my husband to feed her if I need to go do real estate or volleyball or just get out. I usually pump after her morning feeding and this morning the breast that my baby hadn't touched didn't produce much milk. I haven't pumped for 5 days, but I was worried that maybe I'm not making enough milk anymore. My baby knows the sign language for milk and does it all the time. I feel like she's always asking and I'm always giving. Maybe she's starving! What can I do to increase my milk supply? Help

a lactation consultant recommend that i take fenugreek (2 caps 3xday) and blessed thistle (4 caps 3xday) and it's helped me a lot.

Well, if she's gaining weight, peeing/pooping and otherwise an active kid she's not starving! I've had occasional lulls in my milk production (as measured by pump, anyway). The first time it happened I freaked out and bought a ton of books on breast-feeding and milk production. I realized that mint can suppress production and I'd started drinking mint tea (in attempts to cut out coffee, oh well). Once I stopped the milk supply went back to normal. Also, through my son's growth spurts he was constantly wanting to nurse and it seemed I was not able to get as much by pumping - he was probably eating it all up, I guess. Anyway, there are a million factors in producing milk. The most comprehensive book I found was "The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk" by Diana West. Fenugreek is an herb that can increase production. Also, though chronic alcohol can suppress production, I found that after drinking champagne I'm really engorged the next day! [Happy New Year ;-) ] Good luck.
