Irregular periods

I know this is a stupid question, but for some reason I don't know the answer!

My son is 10mo. I've had one post-partum period -- when he turned 7mo.

Can your period just go away again when you're breastfeeding? Or should I see my doctor?

I'm not complaining, just wondering. :)

If you're breastfeeding you may not get your period back for a while. Mt daughter is one and still no sign of it.

Yes absolutely. As long as your still nursing you probably won't be regular. I didn't have one for a year and a half then all of a sudden I started and had one for two months in a row then didn't have one that next month and had one then month after that. Now I have gone two months again without one. Nothing to worry about it's perfectly normal.

Hey! my baby is 4 months old. I had a period last month spontaneously. This month, no period! I took a pregnancy test and thank Heaven it was negative...so my answer is yes, it can just go away again, or you and i are suffering from the same disorder! :)

It's completely normal, in fact sometimes when women are breastfeeding they have what seems to be a perid but it's actually breakthrough bleeding, that's when you bleed because of the build up in your uterine lining but there is no ovulation so it's not actually a period and that kind of bleeding has no real pattern it just happens when your uterine lining builds up enough that it needs to slough off some of it. Some people also call it sterile periods. If you watch for normal signs of ovulation like in your cervical mucous then you'll notice when you're going to have a real a period. It's also normal to have very irregular periods while breastfeeding, so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I began taking birth control, and I had quite a bit of spotting while on that, but then I quit taking it and it went away. I didn't have my first true period until he was 9 mo. old.

It's normal... crazy hormones! If you have any additional symptoms (fever, unusual cramps, nausea, etc.) then you might want to talk to your doc. I have 4 kids and didn't have a period after I stopped bleeding from delivery either while I was nursing. They slowly come back as you wean, but also keep in mind that every person is different so don't compare to everyone else. Only you know what isn't right for you and it wouldn't hurt to talk to your doc. just to be safe. I am sure he/she will reassure you that it's normal, too. :)

I also had irregular periods when I started to wean breastfeeding, some with months in between. I even had irregular periods when I started to take the pill in order to prevent pregnancy. I thought that was weird as the pill is supposed to make your periods more regular, but one's hormones are much more powerful I guess.

It happened to me when my daughter was 8 months old then I didn't get another one till about 11 or 12 months, and they're still pretty irregular.

Take a pregnancy test, once your period starts, it usually doesn't stop.

Yes, the hormones involved in breastfeeding make the periods irregular. It all depends on how much you are nursing. After PP bleeding I didn't have a period for over a year and then after that they were sporadic and did not get regular until I was only night nursing. However it is possible to get pregnant while nursing even if you haven't had a period yet so if the possibility is there, it would not hurt to get a preg. test.
