Is it safe to drink diet drinks while breastfeeding, or will it affect babies weight gain?

I would like to try a diet supplement drink but afraid it will cause 2month old baby to not gain the weight he should.

Thanks, Lisa. You explained that a lot better than I could at the time :). FYI to Melanie, I have to eat about 2400 calories a day to maintain my weight. I lost a lot around the time that my daughter was 4 months. I would be wasting away if I only ate 1500-1800. It takes some time to figure out what works for you.

The components of your milk are not affected by your diet. However- one should go about dieting carefully while breastfeeding. A nursing mother needs a minimum of 1500-1800 calories a day to maintain an adequate supply, and fad and crash dieting can cause a drastic reduction in calories in a short time. This can reduce your supply and also poses the risk of releasing environmental toxins that are stored in the fatty tissues of your body.

So- it is alright to attempt to lose weight while breastfeeding, but you need to be careful about it. I agree with Sara- eat healthy- lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, plenty of water, and moderate exercise.

I would skip the diet drinks and any dieting in general while breastfeeding. Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water to ensure that your milk supply stays up.
