It's amazing how your ideas of baby led weaning can change

I swore at 12 months we would be done nursing. Well, my son turned 1 last week and my husband was home on his two week leave from Iraq so we started. This morning, for the first time in 8 1/2 months, my son took a sippy cup and drank an entire cup of whole milk. I suddenly realized how much I didn't want to stop nursing him. And he must have sensed it because he was happy to be nursed. Now I am 100% sure I want him to wean himself (which probably will be in a few months unfortunately :( ).

Tess, usually one good sized chunk of time will let your cycle start, like 6 hours in the night. If you can get him to sleep 6 hours without nursing at night this will likely start up your period. My son was still bf about 8 times a day when I got my period back but it was right after he started sleeping one good long stretch at night before needing another feed.
And once you concive your milk will eventually slow up alot and so it's probably a good thing your body wont start ovulating again until it notices that your son doesn't need milk so much. I sort of feel bad that my second pregnancy has made Eric adjust without so much breastfeeding before he was ready. I hate thinking I wanted another baby and now it's cutting into erics needs.
But my daughter is totally worth it and I'm sure Eric will always be happy to have her :)

I totally agree. My husband and I thought we would be so ready to wean at 1 year. Well - he was a year old March 4th and I just cannot imagine stopping. He eats food - probably plenty of food - but he still nurses just as much. He had some seasonal allergies a couple of weekes ago and couldn't breathe and nurse very efeectively, but he still needed it and wanted it and I just had to give him meds and suck out his nose and keep trying cause he just needed it!
On a side not - I really want to get pregnant again and I still have not had a period. *sigh* I really thought he would cut down on feedings when we started food, but he nurses almost just as much.

i also remember previous posts, and reading your feelings on nursing past 1 so this is great to hear :)

there was a book i read while i was pregnant about breastfeeding and one of the chapters was about nursing toddlers. at the beginning of the chapter it had a warning that told moms not to read any further unless your baby was at least a year old because when we have younger babies its just so hard to imagine nursing an older one. you really can't make up your mind about it until you are there. i was so surprised when my son was turning 1 how much of a baby he still was. i always had this vision of what he would be like at a year old and i was so wrong!

good luck :)

Yup I sure changed my mind! I thought one year was it, but as it got closer I felt all panicky that i wasn't ready to stop, and Eric obviously wasn't either! So we continued. I'm completely happy we kept going. Idk if your son will self wean in a few months, he might! But Eric is almost two and shows NO signs of stopping! Well I'm in it for the long haul anyways, and by this point it's honestly so normal and easy I couldn't even be bothered to care when he weans! I just don't care, he can stop when he is good and ready to stop and I bet I'll still feel sad when that day comes, even if it's two or three years from now and I'm breastfeeding one or two other little ones! :0

That is awesome Brianna! I remember your posts and your feelings. I would bet many mamas who nursed past 1 had the same feelings you had. I was one. With my first daughter, I said 6 months or when she got teeth. That came and went. Then I said 1. She weaned at 17 months. Then my twin boys came along. They really changed my views of extended nursing!
