It's time to switch to formula

I've been breastfeeding since my son was born four months ago. I'm no longer producing enough milk for my son. After he eats, he always still seems hungry. How do I get over the guilt of switching to formula?

If you want to continue exclusively breastfeeding, you can increase your supply by nursing him more frequently. I'd give it a week before trying the formula.

How do you know you're not? Is he producing a sufficient number of wet/dirty nappies a day? Is he gaining weight? If he still seems hungry, nurse him again. It's common for babies at this age to go through a growth spurt where it seems they are constantly at the breast. But it's normal. My daughter was the same and she's currently going through a growth spurt at 12 months. For growth spurts I certainly wouldn't recommend solids, just keep nursing him on demand, even if he just nursed half an hour previous. It will pass.
If you are pumping, the amount you get from a pumping session is nowhere near as much as a baby gets from nursing directly on a breast.

Is he losing weight? Is he dehydrated? If not, your milk is sufficient. Babies go through growth spurts when they will want to nurse very very often. This is not an indication of an insufficient milk supply.

I would not recommend supplementation with solids, and especially not rice cereal. Cereal is nutritionally deficient, and no major health organization recommends solids prior to six months.

He is a good candidate to start supplementing with rice cereal. They recommend starting between 4-6 mo. However, some babies are different. You don't need to switch to formula just yet.
