I am 33 weeks pregnant and the hospital I am going to deliver at has set visiting rules for flu season.

For labor deliver and recovery as well as the mother baby unit no one is allowed to come and visit mom and baby during the entire duration of there hospital stay except for the moms spouse or 1 support person and baby's healthy grandparents. Absolutely no children are allowed into any of the units.

Is the hospital near you instating any rules like these for flu season?
What is your opinion on these rules?

Maybe opt for a home birth?? Very safe these days and would be a preventative measure for ALL involved...just a thought.

I hadnt heard of it either but it makes sense, although I think they should allow your own children in. Pregnant women, woman just after childbirth and newborns are very vulnerable to swine flu so its a good precaution I think.

my hospital has this year round... I dont have other children but understand that point, but labor was so exhausting I told everyone ahead of time that I didnt want visitors, I wanted bonding time, recovery time, all that without feeling like i had to "entertain" visitor... the baby is not going anywhere, there will be plenty of time to show off after you get some sleep!

I havent heard of that here..but I honestly think its a sad but good idea.. pregnant women and babies are really succeptable to getting sick.. and you wouldnt want to have the flu and recover from having a baby or have your little one get it..being so young its such a high risk.. but I understand its probably sad too. cause I would want my little ones to be able to visit me.

I don't know about the smaller hospitals around here but I know the big children's hospital is doing this. I think it is a good thing trying to keep the patients from getting worse and the visitors from getting sick but its not right keeping people from their loved ones in a time of need. I think it would just be better to make sure they aren't sick when ppl visit and have them wash their hands very well and maybe even wearing the face masks or something to be safe. But it is not right to keep them away, what if the people in the hospital only have a few days left or something and they aren't allowed to say goodbye.

Now about the maternity ward this is one reason I'm seriously considering a home birth next time. I want my now 6 month old to be there with me when his new brother or sister is born and I don't think the hospital I was at allowed that before the new flu outbreak.

Oh, gosh! I hadn't heard of this!!! I'm expecting a baby in December and am planning a hospital VBAC, but definitely want my son (who will be 20 months then and as of right now is still nursing...) to be able to visit me!!!!

I am happy to hear of hospitals taking precautions for this year's flu season, which could be bad, but it seems there should be some way to keep from infringing on a family's rights during the time of adding a new member to the family. If I have to have another c-section, there is NO WAY I could go 3 or 4 days without seeing my son.

Do you have other children? Are you going to be okay with these restrictions or is it making you reconsider? One thing I might try is contacting the hospital and asking about exceptions if my child can be deemed healthy enough to come and visit...
