How can you tell the difference b/tw mastitis or a blocked duct ?? I have had mastitis b4 but had fever with it and didn't know if that was the only difference cuz it feels about the same now but no fever, or does a blocked duct turn into mastitis if you don't get it taken care of soon enough?? There is a lump there and it hurts really bad, I've been nursing/pumping more often to try to clear it up, but it still hurts bad.

blocked duct. massaging, and all the things Sara D said to do didn't work for me. I had really stubborn blocked ducts. I used an over the counter herb called Lecithin. worked like a charm

sounds like its a clogged duct, if you get it once you are prone to continue getting it, and yes it will turn into mastitis. u can do hot compress, hand express in the shower under hot water, offer that breast first, point babies chin toward the clog when ur nursing, massage that spot when ur pumping, what works for me is to lay baby on the bed and nurse over her on all fours, it looks funny as heck but hey it works. good luck i know what your going though, i have had many clogged ducts and mastitis twice, its not fun.

I had a lot of issues with blocked ducts in the beginning. I've also had mastitis. It wasn't very severe, I didn't have a fever. A blocked duct does hurt. Apply heat before nursing and massage the lump while baby feeds. Point baby's nose at the lump. This puts the strongest suction on the blocked ducts. My LC had me start every feeding on the blocked side so that baby was nice and hungry and would suck well. If you notice redness on your breast (not from applying heat) or you feel flu like symptoms then you should see your doctor. I also took Ibuprofen to help with the pain when they were really bad. If you've got a really stubborn clog then you can try this: get a big bowl of very warm water. Lean over and put the affected breast in the bowl. Massage down towards your nipple. Try this before you nurse. It sounds weird, but I found this on a breastfeeding site because I could not get rid of a blocked duct.

I had a blocked duct once. I applied a hot/warm wash cloth to the area in addition to massaging the area while nursing.

it can turn into mastitis. when u pump/nurse do u massage the area down to help push it out? that is what my lactation consultant told me to do.
