I don't think it's bad for baby but it's bad for you!! Increase chance of cancer, get wrinkles earlier than you otherwise would.... eek.

"Tanning is completely compatible with breastfeeding and will not alter the milk whatsoever. There is no record of any dangers to the breastfed baby in relation to tanning. Sometimes clients are given Carotene to enhance the tanning - that should be avoided while breastfeeding. Make sure to protect your nipples from burn (for your own comfort more than anything), and keep in mind that ultraviolet exposure ages skin prematurely and increases the risk of cancer."

I go tanning to help my skin condition. The UV rays help keep my psoriasis at bay. Sort of and I get to be all glowy. I haven't had any problems with my milk. I've talked to the owner and he said I would be fine. Just think of it as being in the sun. Breast Feeding moms go to the beach and sun bathe all the time. I think you'll be alright.

Well I asked my midwife and doctor about it and even the guy who owned the salon and there is no problem although your skin is alot more sensitive. I never ever burn and I burned! I had to cover my chest aswell cause the first time I went tanning I didn't (no tan lines) and man was I ever sore when I nursed. So anyway, I went tanning often enough while nursing to prepare for vacation, washed up so no cream on baby....there was no problem.

I haven't read anything that says not to tan while breastfeeding. I go tanning and I just put the towel over my chest so that my nipples don't get too irritated. I feel like going to the tanning salon and laying in the bed for a just few minutes is my time just for myself.

Hi Jennifer. I'm not too sure about tanning and breastfeeding, I do know though that there are certain kinds of skin cancer that only develop due to tanning bed/soleriums. So becareful girl. is it really worth it? All the best!

i dont see any reason why you couldnt that would affect your breastmilk.  The only thing i can tell you that would affect baby/breastmilk is the kind of lotion you use. You might want to avoid a lotion that uses a tingle because that WILL IRATATE baby's skin when nursing.  but other than that i have read nothing that says anything against it hurting breastmilk or baby, i know moms who have tanned while pregnant.
