Milk Supply & Starting solids.

I'm starting solids with my daughter but I'm a bit concerned about my milk supply while doing so. She has a dairy allergy so I want to be able to breastfeed through the first year. Should I worry about keeping my supply up while she's eating solids or will it all just regulate on its own?

Two things for you to consider:

1. If you wait until she can pick up food herself, chew it, and swallow it, and let her do that at her own pace, she'll only take what she needs, and you won't have to worry about her nursing patterns to maintain an adequate supply.

2. If you're choosing to use purees, make sure you nurse prior to feeding her. Babies can take in too many solids with purees, and this can fill them up to the point where they end up nursing less- this can lead to early weaning.

keep feeding on demand and it will be fine. introduce solids slowly. most of her nutrition is still coming from bm for the first year. i pumped and used that milk to mix in with purees and cereal (i made my own food). it will adjust itself. i'm still bf at 17 months with no supply issues.

Nursing is first and foremost a supply and demand situation, so as long as she's still nursing some, your supply should shift to meet her needs. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as there still demand, your body should still rise to the occasion. :)
