My 9 month old son is sleeping on average 19 hours in a 24 hour period. That is not normal!

This has been carrying on for over a month now. I've taken him to the Dr.'s and they have done blood work that they normally do to children once they are older. I'm scared this is an introduction to something very serious. Nothing comes back that stands out! Any ideas on tests or anything I could bring to the Dr.'s attention?

My kid used to sleep a crazy lot and still does sometimes, I went to the doctor as well because i was terrified that something was seriously wrong, my Doctor said that some babies just require more sleep and can sleep a lot before they hit a growth spurt. Which my son did, he went from sleeping almost 20 hours a day to about 15-18. My Doctor told me to wake him up every 2-3 hours during the day and 3-4 hours at night to keep him full. Just try and keep them awake if you have to give them a bath and that should help a good bit. Ask your doctor, that's what they are there for and don't worry about being a scared mom, its your child you have every right to worry!!!!!

hey u know what i dont think it would be that un- normal 24-12=12 say they have 3 sleeps a day of 2 hours each = 6 hours left which is nearly ur total thats cool. if there's lots of excitment they stay up longer like ur out but if ur at home mostly its pausable to sleep that long. my baby did easy on but now that shes teething not so much and shes 7.5m. but if ur gut is telling u something run with it but if its ur head ignore

We have central a/c & heat. What about the water I'm giving him! I've even moved his crib away from eletrical outlets because I read that some people are really sensitive to that stuff.

19 hrs does not sound normal for a 9 mth old...keep looking for clues, sometimes we miss the most obvious. How is your air quality?

My 10 month old daughter also sleeps lots as did her older sisters and they are all fine. My littlest sleeps 12hrs at night and has two sleep between 1hr and 4hrs. I find that when my other girls are not home she sleeps longer. It might be the case that he wakes has a play and goes back to sleep on his own which is the case with my little one. If all the tests have come back clear and he is healthy then just enjoy it because it wont last long ;-)

I breastfed my son for the first six months, and my daughter for the first four (I had a problem with keeping my milk with her). They both slept a lot when they were breastfed. Once I stopped breastfeeding they started staying awake more and more.

Are you breastfeeding? Are you taking any medication? If you are taking medications, a small amount will be transfered to your child, and could cause your child to sleep more. Your child may also sleep more if they are going through a growth spirt. Though, I'm with you. Sleeping 19 hours is an abundant amount of sleep for a nine month old if they are normally awake more throughout the day.

My 4 month old son is recently sleeping a lot also. I'm concerned also. I'm not sure if it's something I'm eating that makes him sleepy? But every child is different, so maybe they're just going through a growth spurt and need the extra sleep :)
