Are you and her father small people? If so it could be just genetics. I don't see a problem with having a doctor take a look at her. Keep an eye on her milestones and how often she eats. You might want to try to keep her at the breast longer so she gets more hindmilk.

My daughter is 5 months 2 weeks and she was born at 8lbs 2oz and now she only weighs 13lbs 7 oz!!! The doctor told me that she is smaller than other babies because I breastfeed..Dont worry your baby will come around... Your giving your baby the best food!!! God Bless and Good Luck!!

My baby weighed 8lb5oz at birth and was barely 11 pounds at her 4 month check up and had only grown 2 inches!! My doctor said she is just staying little for us so we have more time to savor her tiny little body. I would consider getting a new doctor...

My baby was 7.5 lbs when she was born and was exclusively BF up until a few weeks ago. She was also gaining weight slowly, but seemed completely fine otherwise. She got sick with pneumonia and dropped a few pounds right before we switched to formula, but had she not gotten sick I feel she would've continued on the right path. I think you should go by her temperment; if she's not overly fussy all the time, seems happy and still plays and does things normally, she's probably fine. My doctor told us that some women's breastmilk isn't rich enough in calories, also, but i hadn't really heard that before... so take it as you will! My baby is now 8 months old and only weighs (barely) 14 lbs.... but she is perfectly healthy! not all babies have to be huge!

My first question is Why? If she is gaining weight overall there shouldn't really be a problem. It is not really true that breastfed babies grow slower (I know some big breastfed babies and some really small formula fed babies). My baby is nearly 9 months old and may have hit the 16lbs mark she was born 6 lbs 9 oz(She was sick a couple weeks ago and she weighed 15 lbs 15 oz. with pants, cloth diaper, and socks on). Her pediatrician says as long a she is gaining weight overall he is happy. It is when they stop or start losing and are not having enough wet diapers a day that he said to worry about it.

Is the visitor a nurse? Is she worried your baby hasn't gained enough? Does she suggest a pediatrician or lactation consultant? Here's a link to what Dr. Sears about gaining... breastfed babies gain slower than formula babies. I'd also ask what weight/growth scale your visitor is using and make sure it is the one for breastfed babies. http://www.askdrsears.com/html/2/t023600...
