My daughter is only 4 months old but has started punching herself in the mouth. Is this normal?

She began doing this the same day as receiving her 4 month immunizations. She doesn't seem upset when she does it, just really focused on doing it. She is hitting herself really hard too.

My nephew just started doing the same thing he is 5 months old and is teething. I think that he does it because it seems to help relieve the pressure off his gums the same way if you've ever had a toothach and it relieves the pressure to push on your gums where it hurts. Just a thought.

Thank you all for your replies. It is really helpful to know other kids are going through this. For some reason I thought only Autistic children did this. I can't remember my son doing it when he was a baby. I appreciate the time you all took to answer.

Autism only shows itself once a child is around 2 years old, and hitting themselves and reptitive behaviour are symptoms. Its very nomal behaviour in babies though as it takes them a while to learn to control their movements.

My son started doing the same thing and it really freaked me out. My doctor said he was just developing his cordination. He actaully bruised his eye once from doing it. Now he's nine months old and has stopped hitting himself but he bangs on EVERYTHING.

Shes probably just trying to develop her hand eye co-ordination. My (almost 4 month old) son is a thumb sucker and has to really concentrate to get the thumb in and usually hits himself first. He pokes his own eyes and stuff too.

Hi Gina

My little boy is only 4 months old too and he has started doing this recently also.  I keep thinking he is going to end up with a black eye or fat lip the way he has been going.  I have been told at this stage they are still trying to get their co-ordination so this is normal.
